In the early 90's the Japanese were selling many powerful sports cars in the US.

    The FD RX-7, SupraTT, 300ZXTT, NSX, 3000GT VR-4, etc.

These cars were often faster and less expensive than the 964 and 993 Porsches that they compteted for sales with.

However, when the world economy turned sour the Japanese sports cars were dropped from the US market or from production alltogether.

Porsche sales, on the other hand, stayed fairly strong. Porsche kept its 911 in the US market and swapped the 968 and 928 for the boxter, which was a big sales hit.

Corvette Sales also stayed stronger than the Japenese.

Why will history not repeat itself? Why will the GT-R come to the US and be a raging success rather than "the sports car for the guy that can't afford a 911"?

Technology? The 3000GT was V6 twin turbo, AWD, AWS, and faster than the 993. This car is a piece of shit on the used market today, while the 993 is sought after and loved.

Speed? Nburg Ring times? The SupraTT was a sales flop despite being faster than the 993. Similarly, it takes a *special* kind of person to pay for a supra on the used market today (think N.Hogan). A 993 or 964, on the other hand, will still get you laid at any sorority house.

Price? The old jap sports cars were cheaper than the 993 and 964, but they never sold as well.

What makes the GT-R so special?

I predict that the GT-R will be a mild sales success while the economy does well, but will withdraw like the 3000GT or just roll along with non-existent sales like the NSX when times get tough.

Little boys don't dream of Nissans; Old men don't blow their savings on Nissans. Or? Are times different now? Why?

Cliffs: Jap supercars came and went in the 90s; They'll come and go again.

anybody who thinks that the production GT-R is even going to come close to putting down the same lap times as the unit they are testing at the track, is only fooling themselves.

Most people buy a Porsche because it's a Porsche. Although it's a Nissan, I think the Skyline still holds some mystique that the 3000gt or Supra never had, which could make this different.

it's not even that. They are claiming it to be as fast at the CGT, wich is pretty ridiculous. They are wringing out every trick in the book in a marketing ploy to generate interest in the product. Great for them, but deceptive none the less, because the production model would never be able to come close to the same times without alot of modification and expensive track tires.

    Good point.

Video games are all full of obscure japanese cars today and little kids play video games.

Are these kids old enough to buy cars yet? Will they shell out 80k for a Nissan if they have a chance to buy a Porsche?

Maybe. The supra is an old nameplate too though. It was very well respected at that time wasn't it?
