So what has anyone heard? I'm in the market for a new laptop and well its PC vs Apple. I know there isn't much out about them as they aren't shipping till feb, but just curious.

Also a big question for me is, now that apple is using the intel chips . . . are the speed ratings on the same scale as PCs? My understand from sonsumer reports was there was some differnce between the PC and apple Power PC speed ratings.

The speed rating is now comparable. Get the Apple. Its a no-brainer.

Yep. And the Intel chip that's in the Apples is a good chip that (AFAIK) is not in any other machines yet. The 20" iMac is looking more and more attractive to me.

I've just watched the keynote speach ( http://macworld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/mw/) on the new iMacs/Macbook pro and it's really making me want to get one. I normally never use Mac but I am impressed with this.

MacBook Pro and Intel iMac have no BIOS, They use EFI.

I've had this slight want of a Apple laptop for a while now, and it just keeps growing. Resell values on the ones are really high though.

You CAN install Windows XP on an Intel Mac. The thing about Vista only was speculation that Intel disputed. EFI comes with BIOS emulation capabilities.

ed. Wait, apparently nobody has done this yet. So its still in the air.

Intel is saying it is possible due to the backwards compatibility. It breaks down to the board manufacturers if they wish to support this. i figure they would.

I'd buy a mac and dual boot it. OSX for development, surfing & what not. Winblowz for Games and other software that i cant use on MacOS.

Maybe even toss linux on it because i could! :o I'm a rebel without a cause!!!

Ars Technica couldn't boot to an XP cd, but /. says they didn't know the CD boot key. Or something.

An emulator is included in the OS (Rosetta).

Apparently alot of stuff is running via Rosetta right now, so once some upgrades get out and you have native intel compiled code running, you'll see an additional performance gain.

I want one of these. My 800mhz G4 iBook is fucking slow.

The X86 (aka IA-32) emulators are not officially supported like rosseta is. But the thing is, the new apples are IA-32 (64?) and there is no need for a chip emualtor. This means that you could possibly see some windows emulators that do not require chip emulation.
However, you could (erm =.=) download* windows vista and run it.

Thats strange, because I had my motherboard, keyboard, etc. replaced on my iBook for a simple depot repair which was $225. Parts were included.

I have one more question . . . the more I look into making the switch from PC to apple and the PowerPC to Intel deal, I keep coming up with questions.

Does anyone know (or heard anything about) how long it will take microsoft to come out with a Intel Native or universal apllication version of Office for apples?
