I've heard that a lot since they brought it back and how it looks nothing like the old GTOs and whatnot. I've also heard people complaining that it looks too much like the Grand Prix, personally I feel that the new GTO is a ok looking car, its not my favorite GTO but for what’s available right now its nice. I just wanted to address the people bashing the car that don’t know what there talking about, first of all the over all car it self....

A GTO is a mid sized performance 2-door sedan, it came stock with a 350ci and 400ci motor and the option of a 4 speed manuel it was hailed as the First true Muscle Car from the 60's, flash forward....

The new GTO is a mid sized performance 2-door sedan, it comes stock with a 350ci motor with the option of a 6 speed manual and is hailed as the first return of the true muscle cars.

    The look

    Here is (top to bottom) 2005, 1974, 1972, 1970, 1969, 1967, 1965, and 1964

If you look closely at the way the grill evolves over the years you'll see that with today standards the new GTO fits right into the evolution chart.

Also the problem of it looking like a Grand Prix,

I give you a 1964 Grand Prix and a 1965 GTO, the only way you can tell the difference is the grand prix says the GP in the grill and the GTO has the Tri power hood. So if you have a problem with it looking like the grand prix then you must have a problem with ALL GTO's??

I'm not a GTO "fanboy" or even a GM fanboy; I'm a Mopar guy. I was just looking at GTO's the other day and noticed that the new GTO is probably the closest looking remake besides the 2005 Mustang. And for the people who still think its not a GTO, look at the Cougar, Malibu, Impala, Charger, ect... at least the GTO is staying true to what it was and now still is...

All Pontiac's in the 60's looked the same too. The difference is that they looked decent back then.

Actually, the GTO (an option on the LeMans) started with a 389, then acquired the 400 in 68?, and became it's own line in '68, after '71 or '72 it regressed into an option again.

I don't think that the criticism the car gets over its looks is so much GTO nameplate related as it is just the fact that it is a very bland looking car. There is nothing flashy and mean looking about.

Now the GTO is supposed to be in the Lexus/BMW luxury performance sedan category (or atleast that is what GM says) but it is being promoted and marketed as the great return of the true musclecar.

If they marketed it correctly ie reaching out to those BMW/Lexus owners and actually got them to look at the car closely they might have a hit on their hands, however by marketing it towards the young performance car enthusiast as the new musclecar and therefore the Trans AM replacement they won't be able to keep the line going.

The younger market that is being marketed to with this car is unimpressed with it. They had that Mean, I am going to destroy you look with the Trans Am and now they have the vanilla every day driver look with the GTO. Its not what they want and thats where alot of the criticism comes from.

I actually thought it looked more like an integra when i first waw it, i think it appeals more to todays market, and i agree that it fits right into the evolution chart.

Just the fact that you have to make this type of comparison and a post of this nature just shows exactly why the GTO is a flop.

You don't see anybody making posts about the 05 Mustang and why we should like it, with a detailed, analytical analysis and by the year comparisons of old 70's Mustangs next to 05 Mustangs with people jumping up and down yelling, "ohh! ohh! See! It is a mustang."

GM just dropped the ball in the car, plain and simple. They rushed the car in from Australia, reskinned it to fit the North American version of Pontiac, and managed to delude each other in management into thinking that the public was going to like it just because they said so, despite the fact that initial buzz over the the GTO was already berating the styling.

Yes, it looks way too much like their other body styles. I think it's stupid to make a car with good power so ugly.

It looks like a Pontiac too me, a very clean and handsome one for a change.

It's the best Pontiac in nearly thirty years, and I'm glad they resisted the urge to slap a lot of ribbed body cladding and striped lights on it. It's easily the best GM muscle offering since the Grand Nationals.

Too bad they didn't leave the fascia alone and simply rebadge it though. Good thing I have a different one in my garage ready to go. :big grin:

That doesn't look anything like a gto. same front-end look, but it's a drag plastic body. Doesn't count.
