The 1987 AMC Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Purchased from the original owner in 1995 with 60,000 original miles. He used it to drive once in awhile, and tow his fishing boat and camper (simultaneously) to the Missouri River to fish a couple times a year. He maintained it religeously and it was just like new. In 1998 rust started to permeate the front fenders and the lower side of the body, so the vehicle went in and recieved a full body restoration over the course of a month. Including all new woodgrain trim, emblems, grille, rechromed body trim, bumpers, etc. The interior is still like brand new with numerous power accessories and the best climate system you'll ever feel in any vehicle. Freeze a side of beef, or roast your ass off in the winter.

The Jeep SJ now has 116,000 miles, and still runs like new.
Those are 31x9.5x15 Michelin X Radial LT tires, 15" Mickey Thompson Classic Performance Wheels, and deep tinted windows.

This Jeep stickered at about $29,000 new in 1986. The only options mine doesn't have is a power sunroof, locking front and rear differentials, and rear wiper/washer.

It also features the original, untouched AMC 360 V8 with motorcraft two barrel carbeurator. I tuned it so good it runs like it's fuel injected. The engine produced 175 horsepower and 295 ft.-lbs. of torque. The transfer case is truly full time, you flick a little vacuum switch and 4WD is activated. You can use it at any speed, on any surface at any time. No other manufacturer offered any system like this, and AMC had been doing it since 1973 with Jeep vehicles.

South Dakota blizzards, the true test of any SUV. This separates the posers from the real deals. Honda CR-Vs won't cut it here.
Real Iron is built to cope.

The Wagoneer has dual Dana 44 axles, a real transfer case, and a 3.31 axle ratio (the deepest you could get by 1987). My current ground clearance is 9 inches at the lowest point which is the rear differential housing.

Gas mileage isn't great, but then again this vehicle didn't cost us upwards of $30k and isn't a daily driver. It gets about 11MPG around town and 15-17MPG on the highway, which is actually good for a Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

More pictures coming soon, including photos of the restoration.

  5. Very Nice Jeep. Its good to see the classics still alive and kickin.

A picture from 1995 not long after the Jeep was purchased. We shod it with BFG Sport King tires at the time, which are decent, if you don't care about ride that is.

An interior shot from 1995 after the first Pioneer CD deck found its way in. It now features Performance Products seat covers to protect the like new leather and a new Pioneer CD deck. The interior is unlike most vehicle built today, the only plastic the A/C ducts, the rest is steel.

Front shot, you can see the large transmission cooler in front of the radiator. The cooler came on the Jeep stock.

Another shot outside the bodyshop with refinished bumper attatched, rechromed window trim attatched, and some of the new woodgrain reapplied to the fresh Sable Brown Metallic paint.
