The Flawless GT-R Has a Fault?
    April 28th, 2008

Word is getting around the traps that the transmission in the famously destructive R35 GT-R may be wearing out faster than expected. MCR, one of the lucky Japanese tuning houses to have a GT-R, have reported that initial inspections are showing unexpected signs of wear in the transmission; raising fears that the GT-R is not as flawless as we’d all hoped.

Perhaps if it were a more expensive car, the gearbox would be less likely to shoot out random cogs and cut your leg off at the knee. Not that it’s going to do that.

MCR’s inspection has lead them to conclude that the transmission’s lifespan—at least if used as heavily as they do—may be no longer than 12 months if the engine’s power is tweaked. Of course, with the V-Spec model on the way, we may soon see a stronger gearbox available.

So putting more power through a transmission than it was designed for and using that power all the time under heavy driving can fuck it up? No Wai!

It's only flaw is that it's too amazing! It even outruns itself sometimes!

I've been saying for months that it was all the nissan engineers could do to make that transmission strong enough to withstand stock power levels.

power adders + dual clutch sequential gearbox = finished

You don't see people dropping turbos into SMG M3s, tiptronic porsches, or DSG GTIs and then running 10s at the track for 3 straight seasons. This is the big problem with these trannies. I imagine this will also prove problematic on the EVO X

The mechanics of the gears and clutches in a DSG gearbox are the same as in a regular stickshift. More likely, the gears just aren't hard enough.

in your defense, that's absolutely correct; this isn't that big a flaw when we consider how fast it is out of the box.

I guess they planned only for a certain amount of power with the tuning restrictions on the ECU and such. But I have faith in the after market world, hopefully they will provide a solution for drivetrain upgrades.

It would have been nice if they over-engineered it like the Getrag 6spd in the MKIV Supra. You could triple the stock power on those fuckers and they still won't break.

Well, if the discussion in this thread is accurate, then Nissan really did transcend into the supercar category with the new GT-R -- what other kind of car is so impressive in stock form that people would say "the guys trying to boost it are being stupid"?

i think anyone trying to boost power out of a honda civic is being stupid. Doesn't make it a supercar.

Disregarding your personal opinion, though, when people who want to see any car with more power than it has are saying it's stupid to add more power, then you know that car is on a different level.

that's what they get for trying to make a heavy ass car fast

not surprised the transmission can't take much abuse honestly

not really. it would be stupid to add power to a civic, and that car is not "on a different level".
