So I've definitely been in a few situations where I've been having a casual conversation with someone and they'll just say "fag" like it's no one's business, yet I can't say that I was particularly offended. I have a gay friend who doesn't fail to correct anyone who uses that word, but to me, it doesn't seem necessary. Anyway, I was just wondering what you all do when people say "fag/got" around you. Is there any correct way to handle this situation?

might I add that I'm not out yet, and people wouldn't guess.

Personally, it bothers me, but I bite my tongue and don't make an issue out of it unless it's excessive.

You all know that I can pretty much handle my own when it comes to things like that, but there has been occasions when I've been jarred by someone actually calling me 'faggot'. Most any other derogative name has no affect on me, but to actually be called 'faggot' kinda stops me in place. I don't know why, but twice I've had it yelled at me and instantly all witty comebacks left my mind. Total blank.

I don't use "faggot" as I consider it to be on the same level as racial slurs and they tend to upset people.

I think of most words as a simple collection of sounds, but there are a few that are used to offend and hurt people. I don't use such words as I can come up with better ways to hurt and offend.

It doesnt bother me if it isnt used in anger and it comes from a gay friend. My best friend might even get away with it from time to time. If used towards me in anger the reaction would be different.

Ive never had it used to be in anger before so I dont know how I would react.

    .

    same here.

Its funny - my lab partner kept dropping it left and right. I told him one night that I was gay and he hasnt said it once - well, he might have slipped, but he appologized for saying it.

I refrain from using it, but I'm so used to hearing it on a regular basis that it really doesn't bother me all that much :dunno:

Nobody's ever said it to me, so I guess that makes it a little different :o

Though I'm not gay, I've conditioned myself so that words like gay, faggot, queer, etc. are not used as a pejorative on my behalf. When others use the word around me I don't always say something but it never goes unnoticed. Maybe I should. For me, it's not even just a homosexual issue. The standards we're supposed to adhere to in terms of masculinity and femininity are stupid.

    Why?

By being hurt by the statement you are giving it power.

While I'm not gay, and thus I can't really understand what it's like to be called a faggot, by accepting the "definition" of faggot, you're letting people hurt you. :dunno:

Perhaps if you speak out against it, it will become about as taboo as the word "nigger." Someday...

The word is not taboo. You do realize almost the entire young black culture uses the word without regard to what it means, right?

Nigger and nigga are still the same word. They just have different connotations.

In academia, it would be argued that both 'fag' and 'nigga' have been reclaimed... leaving 'faggot' and 'nigger' to waste away into the world of obsolescence.

So what? A lot of homosexuals use the word "fag" among themselves, but it's not usually said in a derogatory manner like it is when a straight person uses it.

    There's a difference.

by "accepting the definition"? Are you serious? I don't recall anyone asking me, "do you mind if I call you a fag?"

My point is that by saying "you cannot say this" to somebody, you are effectively giving the word it's power.

By stripping the word of it's power (use of the word nigga and fag by black people and gays, respectively) it does no harm anyone, even when used with malice.

That's all I'm trying to say, don't jump on me. :embd: :naughty:

Which is why I said they just have different connotations. They are still the same.
