OK OT mechanics. What's wrong here. I have a 3 series '94 BMW.

I'll get in the car and it'll act like the battery is disconnected. I don't think it's the alternator because there's absolutley no power, plus I had a new alternator installed about 1 year ago. No lights, no radio, no engine cranking, no nothing. Then all of a sudden, after trying to start it many times, it'll just start with no problem. The radio and time are all reset. Any ideas? Since it sounds electrical, do you think I need to take it to a BMW specialist? Or might it be common enough where I can take it to a regular mechanic?

    how old is the battery?

first of all try replacing the battery it'll cost you around 100 bucks but at least you've eliminated that.

    IT could be something mechanical.

    but eliminate the obvious first.

    i'd start from there...

then if its still having problems take it to a bmw service center have em check out the electrical system

also, when u replace the battery also clean the connectors...

The connectors look clean. I started messing with the battery and the lights come back on when I take off the battery cover. So I think it has something to do with the battery or the lines going to it. Its about 3-4 years old.

    can't hurt to replace it

like i said its the cheapest thing you can do to start the process of elimination and then go from there...

I'd put my money on the wiring(connectors especially) on the battery.. Also look at the battery cover to see if its possibly causing a short(although, that should be much more apparent).

we know that the battery is losing connection because the radio loses power. something is causing a short, and i bet it is inside the battery.
