That's just a crappy crop of a snapshot with a little bit of added contrast. The cat's right ear is blurry cause it has a tweak BTW.

I can't really think of a reason to upgrade from it. I'm buying the 55-250 IS next since it's also cheap and ridiculously sharp.

is this the 18-55 f2.8 IS?

what body do you have this on?

I used a 17-40 F2.8L and loved it but wanted more reach and so I was thinking that this might be my next lens

but you say "ALSO CHEAP" I thought used this goes for like 750?

this is the new kit lens, the 17-55 IS is the 2.8 lens. and the 17-40 is a f/4 not a f/2.8.

no problem, just get your focal lengths and apertures straightened out.

    EF-S 18-55 3.5-5.6 is the stock 20D/30D lens
EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS is (i think) posted above, but him calling it the 18-55 IS makes me confused.
then theres the EF 17-40 F4 L (which I own)

Did you buy the 18-55mm IS separately? Because the standard kit lens on an XTi is the 18-55mm non-IS.

with as bright / blown as those highlights are, you'd think there would be some detail in the dark fur areas

I don't see any blown highlights, and the shallow DOF rends most of the detail out of the dark fur areas.

I did. It cost like $100

And sorry the pic isn't as sharp as it could be  I wasn't even trying to do anything, it's just a ~80% crop of a snapshot I randomly took of my cat.

FWIW everything on the first page of my flickr was taken with that lens too

    http:[email protected]/

You have to admit it's not fucking bad for $100, especially since it has IS.

I don't get this thread. There is another Canon 18-55mm IS lens other than the lenskit for the XSi?

It's OT... If it's not the Tamron, it's so dull it minus whale have vaseline rubbed on it.

    :p

It's the XSi kit lens. The old kit lens was non IS and had 1000x worse optics.

Anyway the reason I made this thread is because I was going to buy a new lens but I can't find a real reason to upgrade from this one. The build quality isn't the best but it's really light and compact. I've been looking at samples from the 55-250IS and it looks awesome so I'm just going to buy that and have matching lenses :o

    huh? no

    EF-S 18-15 3.5-5.6 is correct
EF-S 18-55 3.5-5.6 IS is the new kit lens for the XSi and maybe the XS, and is thought to be a lot sharper

The EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS is a lot more expensive :mamoru:

I have that lens, how can you call that lens a beast? rofl, it's like a basic starting lens, not that great at all. I upgraded to a 17-50 tamron / 2.8 a cpl of months ago and it was a big improvement. I'm also interested in the 55-250 IS.

I used it for several months and I liked it and still do, especially because of the IS, but my Tamron just gives me more depth and quality to my pics, so I almost never use my 18-55 IS anymore, it's basically just a step below. Why do you think it only costs 100 bucks for?
