That's how Pinellas County sheriff's investigators on Wednesday characterized the weapon fired at the homes of deputies or the marked sheriff's vehicles parked in their driveways. Three times - once on Feb. 7 and twice on March 30 - someone or some people fired upon the deputies' cars, homes or both in an area roughly bounded by Walsingham Road, West Bay Drive, Indian Rocks Road and 113th Street. No one was injured in any of the drive-by shootings. Investigators think the deputies were targeted because their vehicles were parked in front of their residences. Detective Michael Bailey said ballistics tests showed the bullet used was a 7.62 mm round, found in an assault rifle such as an AK-47 or SKS. A $10,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to the conviction of the shooter or shooters. Asked about the hefty reward in a case where no one was killed, Pinellas County Sheriff Jim Coats acknowledged his detectives had reached a dead-end in their investigation, despite having interviewed some 100 people. Rewards are typically offered in open homicide investigations when leads have been exhausted, Coats said. Contact Stephen Thompson at (727) 823-3303 or [email protected].
