I was reading an article about metrosexuality in this month's Details (the official magazine for gay guys who haven't come out yet :mamoru: ), and something struck me. The author mentions how several clothing brands are starting to regress from blurring the gender lines between mens and womens fashion, to actually reaffirming them.

Brands like A&F, AE and the like haven't ever really walked that line, but I was just thinking that their clothes really do their best to make men look ultra masculine and girls ultra feminine. Of course, it's all just to use sex to sell their product; emphasizing built torsos and shredded jeans to give their clothes that outdoorsy/rugged/working man flavor.

Hell, it's worked on me (not the jeans, the tight shirts). I buy a lot of their clothes because I like the way they fit me, and they really do emphasize your best features if you wear them right. But even I can't deny that there's something alluring in how they get their product to appeal to you, beyond the fit and comfort. Somehow that's also got me thinking, though, that this might be an overcompensation on both my part and the brand's to appear stereotypically masculine...but i digress.

Anyway, to get back on point– for a brand that seems to try its hardest to make men look like men and women look like women, they have a history of using an awful lot of homoerotic imagery in their advertising and catalogs. Is that purely an appeal to recapture the gay segment that they might have lost due to the actual style of their clothing? After all, let's face it– a lot of gay guys would NOT be wearing those clothes if their ads didn't scream "hey, we think it's ok, and even very hot, to have two guys going commando in jeans that hang off their asses and touching eachother in a way that's just a little too friendly."

I was just wondering what you guys thought about this. Was (I use the past tense, because they did it more frequently a few years ago than they do now) A&F using a touch of gay in their advertising to obscure the gender lines that their clothes so set in stone?

    evidence :mamoru:

Am I looking at hardcore porn? because a couple of those pics show guys simulating bj's. :eek4: Don't know if they are going after the gay market (doesn't cause me to want to buy those things) but then again str8 guys are threatened by anything remotely suggestive of gay themes so maybe their target are the mets.

i always thought it was known by the gay community that AF used gay over/undertones in all of their advertisements. Gays love it, straights dont really care cause the clothes are so hip (from the gays making them hip - afterall - gays buy the clothes, women love gay guys - so straight guys always see the gay guys with all the women - so straight guys buy the clothes too - isnt that how it generally works?).

wait, does that even remotely answer your question - i got to rambling there - probably not, sorry :o

    What can we say...sex sells...

For such the gay overtones that their ads display, they still won't advertise in a magazine such as XY. XY being a gay magazine targeting ages somewhere between 15-22. They've had many articles about how opposed A&F is to advertising in it, but their male ads seem to sell one thing besides clothes =)

companies like abercrombie, CK use something called coded homosexual imagery. This means that homos like us are able to see the homo imagery but the common straight individual might not. This way, these sort of ads can reach out to both the gay and straight communities in mainstream publications without offending or marginalizing the straight population.

The companies believe that the gay market is a big money maker, even though research suggests that despite the DINK stereotype (i.e., Dual Income, No Kids), gays on average have similar incomes as heteros.

I think the more interesting thing is how a lot of companies are now starting to do to men what they have done to women, dismemberment, that is having ads feature objectified bodies that lay emphasis on the torso, box/package, etc. So rather than seeing full bodied models, we see what was listed previously. At times, i think it's a bit cool to see the power structure in gender being challenged since men in ads are being treated just like women have been. But at the same time, i'm a bit disturbed by objectification and dismemberment in general.

He was my "high school sweetheart" I dated him for 2 years. We still keep in contact but he is in Minnesota now. I robbed him of his virginity, lol, so no photos. He is not very kinky, or wasn't then. Then again that was like... I am going to date myself here... 1999-2001.
