no thanks. Arbitrary spending caps are fucking gay to the max. If you enjoy manbuttsecks then that's fine... But for the rest of us, get a fucking better job, or work an extra 2.8 hours at minimum wage and buy my system -- at least it'll work well and won't blow the fuck up.

That $22 is non-negotiable. It allowed for a REAL psu, GOOD hard drive, GOOD mobo, GOOD cpu, DVD-RW, etc.

that pc sucks. The video card alone of any computer that is worth having would cost more than 250.

The computer built in original article is worse than the Wal Mart specials... I don't know why anyone would go to the effort to build their own computer that sucks worse than any computer sold at Wally World, regardless of price. This is essentially the dumbest article i've ever read. They went on Newegg and picked all the cheapest shit available... how difficult is that? Someone who would buy a $250 computer couldn't put it together anyway, let alone use Ubuntu.

    Here is my budget build:
    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5712985

It even comes with an operating system that people who would actually buy a sub-$500 computer could use. :hsugh:

It can't be done. I discarded the DVD drive altogether and I still can't find a case that isn't complete shit. Rosewill rules the sub-$30 category, and they might as well be made of paper.

I could have put DDR2 800 in there for just $1 over budget.

Hah! Dammitall, I didn't even think to look at AMD. Dammit dammit!

Not a bad looking case. I mean, it's obviously a G5 knockoff, but it looks pretty good for being what it is. The negative reviews seem to revolve around not knowing how to deal with the raised spots where the motherboard screws directly into the case, instead of using standoffs. Other than that, it's got your normal cheap-case issues: kinda noisy, cheap PSU -- easily solved with a Corsair and some Dynamat.

And you being an AMD guy, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Yeah. For but a brief moment, I followed blindly in Jolly's footsteps. It's no wonder I failed the challenge.

    I'm so ashamed. :wtc:

    I just spent $350 on:

    ECS-Elite Group 6100 Mobo
    AMD 4000+ x2
    1 GB Corsair Select Memory
    250 GB WD HDD (SATA2)
    Samsumg DVD/CD burner/reader (SATA2)
    Xion Case and 500W PSU

I know it is a cheap comp but it runs Ubuntu 7.04 really well and it was the first computer I built. I love it for everyday stuff. I do plan on going all out around Christmas time and getting a Q6600 and 8800GTS for gaming on a new build.
