Nominations are annouced tomorrow in the AM.

For the first time in many years there will be 10 films nominated for Best Picture.

Is it going to open the field to more popular films, or will it make way for small but critically acclaimed small films?

My take is it's a marketing ploy, now studios can market a film as an "Academy Award" nominee.

    Predictions?

Here are mine (not necessarily who should be nominated)

    Best Picture

    Avatar
    The Hurt Locker
    Up in The Air
    Invictus
    Inglourous Basterds
    Precious
    An Education
    District 9
The Fantastic Mr. Fox or Up
    Crazy Heart

    Best Actor

    Jeff Bridges-Crazy Heart
    Colin Firth-A Single Man
    George Clooney-Up in the Air
    Morgan Freeman-Invictus
    Jeremy Renner- The Hurt Locker

    Best Actress

    Sandra Bullock- The Blind Side
    Carey Mulligan -An Education
    Helen Mirren -The Last Station
    Gabourey Sidibe - Precious
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia

    Supporting Actor

Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
    Matt Damon -Invictus
    Woody Harrelson-The Messenger
    Stanley Tucci -The Lovely Bones
    Christoph Waltz -Inglourious Basterds

    Supporting Actress

Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
    Diane Kruger, Inglourious Basterds
    Mo’Nique, Precious
    Penelope Cruz, Nine

    Best Director

    Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
    James Cameron, Avatar
    Lee Daniels, Precious
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
    Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds

Of those I only saw District 9 which I hated and Inglorious Bastards which was ok. However Christoph Waltz should ABSOLUTELY win best supporting acrot for his role in it.

Well, my sentimental favorite Crazy Heart wasn't nominated, but Maggie Gyllenhaal was in a supporting role.

All in all my predictions weren't too bad

10 films for best picture? The votes are really going to be divided up.

Seems like the Avatar momentum is slowing down and the Hurt Locker momentum is picking up.

The little film that could against the Blockbuster

I would put money down that Avatar won't win simply because it's popularity has caused tremendous oversaturation.

There's been so much Avatar talk in the media, that I started to really get pissed off and root against it...and then I remembered that I fucking loved the movie after i saw it.

Even Roger Ebert's openly attacked Avatar...and he gave it 4 stars and compared it to Star Wars.

Textbook case of something's popularity working against it

People hate avatar because it uses the oldest story in the book, think dances with wolves and pocahontas. However, the special effects and acting were really good, making it a compelling movie. I am hopeful that it wins.

I dont think thats it. Otherwise people would hate Dances with Wolves/Pocahontas/Fern Gulley too, which they do not.

It's lost a lot of momentum, Hurt Locker seems to be the favorite right now

The Hurt Locker just fucked up because of one of the producers sent out e-mails to inside people trying to persuade them to vote for it.

I still think Avatar deserves to win, but I could definitely see Hurt Locker winning instead. It's hard to pick one or the other since they are such different films.

I haven't seen that movie, and I love Woody Harrelson, but I can't see anybody beating Christoph Waltz. His performance was amazing.

no way. both chris waltz and tucci put in better performances.

even his own role in zombieland was more impressive than his work in the messenger. (and im partial to military movies)

want hurt locker to win, but i put money on avatar as the safe bet.

only chance would be tucci for lovely bones and plummer for last station. both did good work and have been nominated in all of the smaller award shows as well.

with that said, bet the house on waltz.
