I've trouble shot this problem till my teeth turned blue.

Yesterday I had Direct Connect open and THAT'S IT. On a bootup that was less than a day old ... on and OS that was less than a week old ... (win2000) and the computer says I don't have enouph free memory to play a movie. (ddr 2700)

It freezes all the time. Different applications at different times when there is plenty of ram to go around. :dunno:

I quess it's the HD. I've changed vid cards and the ram is new. Temp is normal. All drivers updated and freshly installed along with OS after a complete format.

I'm at my wits end. The HD is a Western Digital with an 8meg cache. ..

... here's the specs... ( Once I fixed the problem I wanted to sell it ... but that's not going to happen until I freaking FIX THE PROBLEM.)

    Monitor -- 265$ http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...onic%2Cgs%2C790

    Mouse -- 12$ http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...ogitech%2Cmouse

    Video Card -- 140$ http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...2C4%2Cti%2C4200

    CPU -- 158$ http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...value=4186,3922
(this is the price for the 2.4. The 2.2 I guess is not sold anymore. :dunno:

    Keyboard-- 17.00 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...rtby=14&order=1

    Sound Card -- (gamer) 75$ http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...rtby=14&order=1

    Cd Rom - Write/dvd player -- 56$ (black) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...rtby=14&order=1

Case -- (pic will be up soon) Looks like this one except the glass side. It cost me 65$ I think. (i'm putting the power supply in with that price even though the one I have is a 400W and not 350w like most cases come with. (it's a junk powersupply and should be upgraded)

(I don't think this model has the 5 meg cache mem. but I'm using the price anyway.)

Posting in the CP forum would mean you're asking for computer help. Although if you're selling stuff, you will want to post in the buy/sell forum.

As for the locking up, I'd say pull everything out and see how well it runs for 24-48 hours. One lock up is enough to null this test and would imply an issue with the hardware still left in the machine. I would make sure you have the latest drivers for the motherboard and drive controllers (I assume you've checked the hardware listing and made sure all the devices loaded up ok). I might also suggest running it for 24-48 hours in safe mode and see if it locks up. If it does, you definitely have a hardware problem. If it doesn't, then you definitely have a driver/software problem.

Pull everything and start adding components until you get to the point where it locks up.

I would bet that it's either a bios issue, or since you're getting that memory error, the ram is bad.

Do you have a friend with PC2700 that you could borrow to test it with?

The ram is brand new. I had a prob. with the memory when the computer didn't boot up about 3 months ago and got new ram.

I haven't seen any updates for the bios so far and all other drivers are new w/no conflicts.

I'm not trying to sell anything just tried giving you a list of all the hardware. The list has $ marks b/c I was trying to sell the comp. a little while ago.

Like I said before it's new ram and I have another vid. card I have swapped out without any change. Then of course it's a new OS with all new updates drivers.. etc..etc... Temp. is good so I'm confused.

I'm going to go look for bios updates for the p4b533 MO-BO. If someone could give me any advice on the bios flash or anything along those lines that would be great. I've never done a bios upgrade.

I have no replacement parts. It's a one at a time deal.

I'm thinking either the HD or the bios.

Would the sound card cause a problem like this? I guess I can pull that. Then I can pull the network card.

After that I quess I'm out of options.

As mentioned: pull everything non-essential out. If its not a motherboard, CPU, RAM, hard drive, or video card, then it should be pulled out. Then run the computer. If it locks, you have more serious issues. If it runs fine, then you have a hardware conflict or one of the items removed has issues...
