The most accurate is hydrostatic testing but it's not possible to test on your own and even that has a variance. Most common method is skinfold testing. A decent caliper isnt cheap though.

    look in the mirror.

eat clean, work out regularly for 60 days.

    look in the mirror.

    look better? rinse, repeat.

look the same/worse? eat cleaner, work harder

 Wow it actually took 5 replies to get that out.

Get the underwater testing done if you can. If you're just looking to track progress, one of those handheld electrical ones or calipers work fine.

werd. I think skinfold testing is most efficient in terms of accuracy and cost. College gyms (I don't know about commercial ones) have caliper testing for a reasonable price.

    DEXA>Bodpod>Hydrostatic (underwater)>Caliper>Post a pic so Evolude can tell you>Scale

Basically the more you spend, the more accurate it is. Calipers are fine and accurate enough for seeing progress. I think the scales suck and are really inaccurate. Hydrostatic testing may be offered periodically by your gym or one near you and only costs around $50. Beyond that you really don't get enough accuracy improvement to justify cost.

You're right, scales probably are worse. Fixed. Please forgive me.

If you have a kinesiology or athletic training program at your college most of the time you can get tested for free or like $10. This was my experience in our program as the students need it for practicum hours working in the lab for our degrees.

Vivisection is by far the most accurate. You should do that.
