Hmmm so i have a linux box at my University that im using for my jsp project.

So i asked our network admin if he could open up SSH port so i could get access to work on it. This is the convo.

Me: Can I get the SSH port opened so i can SSH to my box.
Him: Why use SSH when there is telnet?
Me: Well Encryption is better then none, and since your all anal about security...
Him: Telnet or nothing. Telnet is what we use, and you better get to love it.
Me: ok not my problem if my box gets used for malicious stuff in the school.
Him: remove your box from the school network please.
Me: shit, ok ill go with telnet.

hmmm didnt go to well, hes a fucktard. i hope something does happen :big grin:, but then I will be blaimed, and im already in shit for OT flooding the CISSA board.

You school is living in the past.

We have SSH and strictly NO telnet here.

Ehh, they should either grant telnet and ssh, or none at all.

FTP may not be a more secure protocol, but there's less that can go wrong if it's broken into (as opposed to telnet / ssh access).

my college blocks incomming/outgoing ports they dont need/use for security reasons.

i think the other 99% of the C&P forum got that part.

wtf... in your first post... you said u're university uses telnet ... so they have at the least telnet port open... :slap: :slap:

so if u just have the SSH server run on telnet port... u can still connect to your linux box ssh server, which is now running on port 23(or any other port that the university has open) instead of the standard port 22, from anywhere...

u must be in the other 1% because u obviously didn't get it :fawk:

99% of the c&p forum are idiots..... wtf are u trying to prove with that argument???
