Every time I come to visit my family my dog gets skunked in the face. :hs: I don't know how many there are in this neighborhood, but I've been thinking about bringing my 10/22 out here with me on my next visit and shooting some super colibris. I'm not sure how many I realistically could get, or if it would even be worth the trouble of killing and bagging them if there are tons of them around that we're not seeing. They do live in city limits and in a subdivision so this would be completely illegal, but I don't think the colibris would harm much as long as I'm shooting down at them (i.e. not pegging them while they're climbing in a tree or on a fence.) It'd be about the same power as a hi-power air rifle. I'm not sure how much a professional exterminator would cost or if it would be much more efficient. I just want payback for all the times I've had to scrub my dog's face and live with that vile smell for weeks at a time.

So if anyone has experience in this area let me know.

Make sure you get them in the head/upper body. I hear if you shoot through their bag of skunk juice or whatever the fuck it is, the area it was shot is gonna smell for weeks.

I'm pretty sure the dead skunk smell won't be pleasant to deal with. And the last time my parents poinsoned some rats/mice a few of them ate the bait, then crawled underneath the house and died. Their restroom smelt like dead animal for months, no shit.

Being that it's in the city limits, I'd go the air rifle route if I were you. Shooting skunks with a .22 is a dumb thing to get the cops called on you for. Nobody's gonna hear you shooting an air rifle, and if by chance they do notice they're a lot more likely to take the time and ask what you're doing, at which point you tell them you're ridding the neighborhood of skunks and they'll probably say "oh, thanks".

I've seen air rifles used for shooting small game(like squirrels), but I guess I've never seen a loud one.

It's a fenced in back yard, the fence was put up so our dogs could run free back there and play.

Their eyes don't shine when you hit them with a spotlight.

They dig for bugs using their ears to find them. So they're going to find a spot that's well watered, like a flowerbed or a nice yard. On the golf course they hit the green 90% of the time.

If you shoot it in the head, or a bunch of times it's going to die in your yard, and you're going to have tot deal with disposal. If this happens pick it up with a think plastic bag. Don't shoot it in the ass. Go for a belly shot so it goes home and dies.
