I am upgrading my computer for the first time in ages (2500+ currently) I really liked AMD back then but it seems like Intel is killing AMD nowadays and I'm no fanboy.

Is the Q6600 still a good bargain? Is having a quad core even advantageous or is it a lot of marketing? I think I'd mostly be playing games and doing basic desktop stuff. No hardcore video rendering or number crunching or anything like that.

Budget for the whole system ideally around 1000, but as high as 1200 if necessary.

if you can't decide between dual or quad, wait for AMD's tri-core. :mamoru:

anyway,... apps that will utilize all 4 cores will come eventually,... but right now, you don't need a quad.

the low $280 price of the Q6600 is very attractive, imo.

Been doing some research and I think the E6750 is what I need. There's currently a deal of $175 off slickdeals. That's $100 savings and it performs generally BETTER in gaming than the quad core.

strike the deal, but 190 is still good

They don't need to discount Q6600s like that to get customers to their store. Besides most vendors won't be getting them cheaper than $250 and likely won't want to take that sort of hit on them. Hard drives, optical drives, and mid range graphics cards are the things that seem to get reduced from what I remember of the past few years.

Remember that Intel July 22 Price Cuts chart?
Q6600 falls to $266 per unit, in 1000 unit quantities.
That's probably the lowest a retailer can sell it w/o suffering a loss.

I think the new chips (Phenom and Penryn) will be delayed as usual too.

500gb for $99 and AMD 6000x2's with mobo for $169

never say never... especially on BLACKFRIDAY :noes: ;)

Do you guys see the 8800 gts extreme bundle coming down in price for black friday ? Same goes for processors, I really want a good core duo that'll last me for a while(at least a yr b4 any major upgrades). Should i wait till black friday to build my new system or wait 2 months longer and hit up the inventory sales? Im pretty set on the 8800 series for now and plan on just running 2 in sli if it comes down to needin to keep up (which shouldnt happen for a while). Any other sugestions ? Im open to pretty much anything right now and not including monitor and hd dvd drive(xbox 360 add on) my budget is ~$1400

Any store selling Q6600s for less than $250 is going to be taking a loss on them, what stores even sell processors in the US; Frys, Best Buy and CompUSA? Any others? A processor isn't the sort of item they use to get people in to the stores on black friday.

Although volume pricing will probably come down again when the new lines come out.

As far as I know Intel are replacing the Q6600 with the Q9300 (2.5GHz), so quad core entry might remain at ~$275 for a while yet. I think really it all hinges on AMD's offerings.

    Here's a list of Intel's 45nm Penryn chips.

    Intel Yorkfield (Quads)
    Core 2 Extreme QX9650 ($999) – 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=130 W
    Core 2 Q9550 ($530) – 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=95 W
    Core 2 Q9450 ($316) – 2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=95 W *** This is sweet :x:
    Core 2 Q9300 ($266) – 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 2 X 3 MB L2 cache, TDP=95 W

    Intel Wolfdale (Duos)
    Core 2 E8500 ($266) – 3.16 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W
    Core 2 E8400 ($183) – 3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W
    Core 2 E8300 ($TBD) – 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W
    Core 2 E8200 ($163) – 2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache, TDP=65 W

Can't find anything with AMD yet.
But one thing people should watch here is how low AMD will price their tri-cores. If it is priced too low,.. I think it could hurt both company's dual core offers.

    yeah, my bad, fixed it.

the evga 680i probably just needs a bios update to support it.

yeah.. cause we all know that stores don't take losses on BLACKFRIDAY just to get people into the store and buy other shit

I remember last year, the Fry's near me $1 2gb USB pen drives and $99 360's if you were the first 25 people in line... (that meant in the COLD RAIN) also free, NICE Cannon printers with the $75 19" LCD monitors

yeah...they don't sell anything below cost on BF

You obviously failed to read the latter sentance of my post. You think retail stores selling processors for $50 off is going to seriously get the sort of customer they want in to the store? Quad core HP or gateway systems maybe, single processors? Remote chance to say the least, even if they did they aren't going to be in any sort of quantity.
