I know this isn't technically anime/manga discussion, but I figured this thread is for the Anime crew here. If a mod wants to move this, please move it to someplace besides Off Topic. :hs:

Has anyone looked into teaching English in Japan before? The only program I've heard of so far is the Jet Programme, but I'm looking for alternatives in case JET doesn't work out for me.

    Advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i don't know the slightest bit of japanese and would never dare step into a japanese school unless it was in some way a clever ploy to kidnap school girls. :dunno: maybe thats your intention

I always wanted to be a professor on a Japanese school and give brain surgery lessons while being very young myself. Right.. no more anime for me tonight.

the jet program randomly assigns you a place to teach in japan

if you get a rural area everyone will hate you

recently there was a foreign teacher beat to death by a group of students because tehy wanted him gone.

You could apply to Nova... it is a private school that is all over japan. I haven't heard great things, but it will get you in Japan so you can wake up and realize not everyone watches anime.

You're not the first person to tell me that. Mind if I ask why?

And do you know of any good alternatives to the JET Programme?

I have also heard terrible things about NOVA, but I also heard that they are having to clean up their act a little bit. Basically I have heard that nova pays pretty poorly compared to Jet. I have a friend going over with Nova next month :x:. If it was me, I would choose JET first, and if i really wanted to get over there then I would do Nova and do English convo with cute college/HS girls in Starbucks on the side.

BTW from what I hear from my 2 friends in JET, they get paid wonderfully.

Another company to look into is Aeon.

If you want to get over there then I would get over any way possible and you can start looking for other work options when you are there. Do your contract with X.company and then get a job somewhere else.

they recently got in a lot of shit, and overall they're awful and hated by most

do something with a private school directly or something with the public school system.

    Cool, I'll look into them.
If possible, I'd like to do it through an organization because they handle housing/visa/flights. I know I would probably make more money looking into private tutoring directly, but it will be my first time out of the country and I don't want to end up screwed over.

Maybe if I had free housing over there I could afford to look into schools there, but I don't have that luxary right now. :hs:
Yeah I've actually spoken to the guy a couple times.

From my understanding as long as you aren't asian in japan then you will be fine. I always hear random shit from my fiance about how Koreans are always copying Japanese and China = shit.

Ugh, I went on JET and came back early. I was in rural northern Japan and it was total shit. I also had friends in NOVA and it wasn't any better. The pay is alright, if you're a municipal JET and they pay for your housing and everything (which is getting less and less prevalent). If not, then it's really not that great. The pay hasn't changed since the program was introduced 21 years ago.

If you want more info about the program, feel free to PM me... Don't let them fill your head with bullshit. Some of it's true; most of it is not.
