The homeowner has been identified as Heath Miller, 34, Sheriff's Office spokesman Pete Palenzuela said. According to school district records, Miller is a music teacher at Howell L. Watkins Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens. He has been with the district since August 2005, documents show. Palenzuela says the Sheriff's Office received a phone call from a woman early this morning at approximately 1:50 a.m. She said her husband had shot an armed man who had broken into their residence in the 1300 block of White Pine Drive. Investigators said the deceased man, who was wearing black clothing and a black mask, was an armed intruder. Nobody else inside the house was injured. The homeowners credit their dog with alerting them to the presence of the intruder, who came in through a sliding-glass door, officials said. Palenzuela said Miller told authorities he saw the silhouette of an individual with a handgun coming through the bedroom door and fired. Deputies said there was "an exchange of gunfire.'' They found the intruder dead in the kitchen with several gunshot wounds. Detectives recovered a .40-caliber handgun used by the suspect in the home invasion, according to Palenzuela.
