just got my Porter Cable kit from Autopia and wondering if I need to tape the seams?

I know with a rotary you have to because the paint is thinner on the edges

No, you can hold a PC in one spot for 30 seconds and even with a wool pad and a compound, about the worst that will happen is some marring of the paint.

Unless your paint is very thin, I don't see how under normal use you can burn paint with a PC.
