I'm just wondering how long you should wait to tan after getting a tattoo, or if at all. I'm going on vacation the 22nd of June so my dad bought us all 1 month unlimited things. It's been 5 weeks since my last tat and I know I'm good on that one, but I have an appoinment this saturday to get a few on my chest. Should I wait to get the tattoo's, or could I just cover it up somehow while tanning? Thanks in advance for the help :)

i'd wait, or just be sure to be covering up and not going into chlorinated water. Sun + tattoo = fading.

IMO avoid tanning at all times. IF you are going to tan use the highest spf sunscreen you can get on your tattoos.

sorry I wasn't clear enough, I meant tanning in a tanning bed, avoid that for quite awhile, cover it up, or put spf 50 on it???

tanning bed = tanning. Be it natual sun or lamps. Cover it up or just don't go get tanned.

Tanning is horrible! Makes your tattoos look like crap and you get cancer! :mamoru:

sorry, i wasnt sure you knew what I meant, was just double checking, you know? Anyway, I've been working outside doing construction for years now and have no visable signs of fading on any of my tat although they are all black only, but now I know I won't tan in the beds, and I'll wear my spf 50. thank guys :)

Sunlight should never touch your tattoos unprotected :hs:

unless you don't care about them.

On the rare few times I used a sun bed, I put high protection sun screen over my tattoo. I would never do it without.

:werd: don't let your tattoos unprotected in teh sun or in the tanning bed. honestly, i don't think it's good for you to be in the sun unprotected anyway, or to use a tanning bed for that matter, since the sun ages you, but that's just my opinion.

i usually always put a thin layer of zinc oxide on my tats if i'm gonna be in the sun for extended periods. other than that i just use a sports sunscreen with an SPF of 48.

has worked great so far! :coold:

ps - i absolutely love being in the sun... :big grin:

by using spf50 or whatever, would my tattoo still have a chance of fading? or is it pretty much protected?

I try to avoid tanning now that I have more tattoos.

I can't help the natural sunlight though

Just an FYI, I went to the beach today and used Aveeno sunscreen for the first time. Being as pale as I am and I was there for 3 hours I didn't get burnt at all...barely even a tan, so this sunscreen is the bomb! Great for tattoos too if it blocks that much sun.

How long should you wait after you get a tat to go in a pool with chlorine?

Till it's fully healed. That goes for any large body of water. (pools, lakes, hot tubs, jacuzzis, baths)

Thank ya. This is the first time I got a tattoo in the summer, I got it about 2 weeks ago and never had to worry about that before.
