Seen vids of them - it just made a little puff. I wasn't all that impressed.

Phx Cobra and I have shot a pretty good bit of tannerite.

In the correct amounts -- it's REALLY cool. If all you saw was a puff, someone wasn't doing it right. We've blown apart some neat stuff with it.

Or you could mix Drano and aluminum foil for the same boom costing about $10.

The allure of tannerite is that shooting it sets it off. You can control when it explodes.

How much would that much tannerite cost?

Would it be chaper to stick a road flare on a propane tank?

Well, probably. Tannerite is pretty expensive, but I think it causes a more powerful explosion in terms of force. It makes a pretty nice crater, as supposed to a bunch of flames.

You might have gotten robbed. You can get 20 half pound targets direct from Dan Tanner at http://www.tannerite.com/ for $85 shipped. Those are about 16oz bottles, and it comes with a mixing container and measuring spoon for the black stuff. One half pound target did this:

That 55 gallon drum went probably 20 feet up in the air spinning end over end. It was sweet.

Oh, and we put 3 taped together on top of a 1" steel plate, set a drier on top of it, and all we found was the motor. The range made us stop using them and passed a rule against them after that one.

FWIW, the half pound targets are equivalent to 1/3 stick of dynamite. They will also substitute for a blasting cap. We set off Kenepak with it with no problems.

    A lot!

If I remember correctly, it was 4 cases or so of tannerite. We ( WA state Arfcommers) got a discount for buying so much. I think $68/case. The 5 gallons was made up of unclaimed tannerite and most of us donating a bottle or 2. ( there were over 50 of us there)

Grand total for 1 earth shaking, boulder splitting explosion? ~$300

    And worth every penny!

    Isn't it just flash powder?

Potassium Percholorate mixed with a fine mesh Aluminum Powder?

No, because if it was it would probably explode when you mix it. Flash Powder is one of the most sensetive explosive mixtures. Think of it as powdered Nitroglycerin in how volatile it is. Its also a high explosive meaning if you put it in a little bottle like that you would probably have bits of plastic flying at super sonic speeds embedding themselves in anything nearby. But you are right in saying its made from potassium percholrate and aluminum powder.

    Chemistry FTW!

Oops...I had it wrong..it's ammonium nitrate & aluminum powder ( aluminum powder must be 5 microns or less.)

    Double checking my records FTW!

its not flash powder. do not attempt to produce flash powder, thats about the easiest way to kill yourself. home made tannerite is totally inert until mixed, and then can only easily be set off by a bullet impact.
you need ammonium nitrate 34-0-0. it must be 34-0-0, other fertilizers will not work.
you put the AN in a NEW cheapie blender and turn the fertilizer (usually called prills) into a dust. you either want to do this at the range or do it ahead of time and store it in a dry, tight compartment. AN will very easily absorb moisture.
you also need aluminum powder. must be very fine, i got mine from www.pyroaluminum.com. Their price is pretty fair, and its no hassle. lots of pyro supply places now are wary to sell straight up AL powder.
when you are at the shooting site, you need to mix 95% AN to 5% AL.
put it in a container that will not fragment alot, use something like a CLEAN DRY pop bottle, a 20oz seems to be about right.
dont mix this anywhere except where you plan to use it, transporting it is illegal, as well as it is illegal to use any explosive for business purposes without a license.
