    depends on what you're shooting.

    Unless you're using a 1D body or 5D, Tamron. If you're using a 1D body or 5D, 17 40 4.0L

I want to say that's the Tamron a lot of people say good things about. $200 less than the L, (but no red ring :() That's about all the input I can put in to this :o

have played with both, i went with the 17-40L. build quality was better, resale value was better. focus was silent and much faster. great for sitting under the basket of a basket ball game and grabbing some shots.

but i do plan on selling it because its pretty worthless on a crop body. its not wide enough.

its true. because if he is shooting landscapes i would say 17-40 for contrast and better build. If he shoots low light i would suggest the tammy due to its faster glass.
