I got to play with the Tamron for the first time the other day. It's not bad. Build quality felt sub-par though. Seemed to focus as fast as the 18-200.

They're about the same price, but the range is insane. If I had to choose, why would I not choose the Tamron? It seems like a 18-200 killer

I've been very happy with my 18-200.

I thought I read here a few months ago that the 18-200 was trash... is that not true?

  7. the 18-270 is a pretty decent lens, it's sharp and it has a slight image stabilization to it. Although it's a pain to focus sometimes, and the AF is loud... I'd recommend the Nikon instead.

I trust Tamron, but not in the super zoom category. Of their 30 lenses, i'd say only 3 or 4 are worth the money and this one isn't one of them.

The variable aperture nikon isn't really worth a shit either, i've heard... they've got 3? versions of that lens, and the top end one is the only one that's good. The others are pretty much crap.

you're thinking of the 70-300...there is only one version of the 18-200.

The variable aperture isn't great, but it's a super zoom with VR...there really isn't anything better in this range.

Superzooms are all about convenience. they're softer than two lenses that would cover the same range but that's expected.

Just don't expect spectacular shots from these types of lenses.

I don't get people who say 18-200 is soft. Either their copy is soft or mine is extremely sharp. I dont' use mine often but when I do use it I've been satisfied with the sharpness.
