Just noticed this lens in add. I was surprised by the price which was only 640 USD. That's pretty cheap for a telezoom, innit? & Tamron generally produce pretty good lenses, right? Anyone ever tried this lens?

    Here's a shot at 270mm

Hmm, I wonder if if performs better than my 17-50mm Tamron in the 18-50mm focal lenght? Because in that case I guess I really don't need my 17-50 anymore, well except maybe for the 2.8 f stop :dunno:

Or does a telezoom usually performs worse in short in normal to short focal length (about 18-50mm)?

The chromatic aberration on the right side of the castle looks pretty beastly...

    .

All those wide-telephoto lenses just seem like one big compromise. They may be good all around, but nothing great about em. Also, bokeh at the zoom end never seems appealing to me from those lenses.

are you looking for a HUGE range?? The larger the gap between the two focal lengths the more image quality is sacrificed is the general rule...

No, I just want to satisfy myself sexually with the thought of getting a new lens that will be awesome..

 i can understand that :p

From what I hear the Canon 70-200mm f/4L is an amazing lens, and it can be had for about $500 used..

Depends what you're shooting. I got my 85 1.8 (around $400) before the 70-200 f/2.8 but that's cause I was shooting mostly portrait kinda work, in a set-up environment (the 70-200 gives me more versatility at events now). If you have Canon, 70-200 f/4 would be your best bet, as it was mentioned in another thread. Again, what exactly do you need this lens for? Cause there could be better options.

stay away from that lens. Tamron makes great lenses (17-50 & 28-75) but also has some failures (18-200, 28-300 and 18-270)

Chromatic Aberation is a phenomena that occurs with some lenses. It's an odd color fringe at the edges of images... i.e. where a roof line meets sky. It appears as a narrow odd colored strip along those borders. You can often see an example of it in newspapers, and magazine images, when the paper became slightly skewed during the CMYK printing process, where each color is layed down separately, thus leaving a strange edge color. think of it as a blurred edge with color rather than poor focus.

I've heard it's slower than the 18-200 and overall not as good.
