I just got my copy of 17-50mm and noticed that the plastic piece where you put your cap/filter/hood has free play in it. To a point where if I point up and down with it, I feel the plastic piece moving. Is this a normal characteristic of this lens?!?

Okay...I was shaking the lens lightly and hearing this plastic move all over the place. Now all of sudden this piece is in its place, and no longer making any noise. :coolugh:

The build quality of that lens is not very good. Don't be surprised.

Ya, looks sharp. I'm going to compare it with my 50mm 1.8 then report back.

Ain't that the truth. I sent mine in for warranty work, just got it back 2 weeks ago. First time I went to go shoot something, and it's already busted again. Zoom is loose as all hell. I wish I could afford the Nikon 17-55 F2.8 instead of this...but at least the pics look good.

My Nikkor 50mm prime seems to resolve letterings on a lens, my subject was 18-200mm VR, better than than my new 17-50mm. Pictures out of 17-50mm is surprisingly sharp and rivals that of my prime, without side by side compare/contrast at 100% I couldn't tell.

The shake would come and go, and it ended up being the front element coming loose. If you turn the front element counter clock wise it would tighten and loosen when you turn it clock wise. There is piece of plastic that you can pop off in front of the front element. Once you do that there are 3 screws. I tightened all 3, 1 was slightly loose and 2 were unacceptably loose. Now the front element stays in place. :o
