    FAL or M1A.

That's all it should take to get you to change your mind.

Another vote for an M1A if you have the green.

I was going to say ammo prices are killer but brown bear .308 is cheaper than brass cased .223 :( so depending on what you plan to shoot.... Personally I've been cutting down on calibers and guns to make an effort to be a better shooter and I'm really enjoying it.

I've always been an M1A fan but that wouldn't be any cheaper than an AR-10, would it? :dunno:

A number of advantages with staying with the AR platform. I'm not a AR-10 expert but I do have to endure my cop buddies yammering about Ar-10 when we drive to the match.

First with regards to optics it is infinately easier to mount a scope on a AR-10 than a M1A. With the M1A you have to use these really funky scope mounts. Many of the scope mounts are a real pain and want to come loose. Some of them even attach with some sort of thumb screws. This is fail on a massive scale. To be honest once you say something about an issue where the scope zero might wander I am already calling it garbage. I'm sure there are some workable M1A mounts but compared to the AR platform your way limited.

Second the AR mags drop free. M1A and Fal mags do not. While this is not as big of a deal to a non competition shooter. Mags that don't drop free means slower mag changes.

Everything on the AR platform is modular. M1A not so much. Just many more options for AR platform guns in terms of stocks, grips, handguards, rail systems, etc.

There AR-10 is modular but it is not standardized. There are 2 or 3 manufacturers who stuff does not interchange. The big factor was the mags. I seem to remember you wanted a lower that can take the DPMS mags as they work, are less expensive, and are easier to get. I also seem to remember that means a DPMS lower or a POF. You'll have to do your research here, again I'm not a AR-10 expert.

Now the big factor to me and hence why I never had a lot of want for a AR-10 is the cartridge. There are two advantages of the 308 vrs 223. First is it's got a little more range. So it's a better 300-600 yard gun than a 223 Ar-15. Second of course is the larger round which makes bigger holes and hits harder. So if it's a fighting rifle, not a bad way to go.

I have decided what I need is something I could build on a AR-15 lower that would give me more range than a 308. I am pretty interested in 6.5 grendal and 6mm AR. I would write more but I'm getting off subject.

well a base model ar-10 from dpms is like $1000 retail. this is for a 16" barrel. For a 308 I would want a 20". So the model I would get with the low pro gas block without the front sight tower (better to run my scope) would be $1500 - $2000

Base model M1A is $1500. The loaded is $2000, and of course the tricked out ones are $4000 w/o the scope.

For those that care in 3 Gun competition the AR-10 is the dominant rifle for heavy metal class (308)

two things that are on my list

I obsessed over some sort of custom FAL build a few months ago.

I'd be nice to own all 3 though.

I would vote for an FAL as well. Standardized (except for metric vs. inch), but generally it is a battle proven platform.

Get an AR-10. My brother has one and it's it's one of the sweetest shooting rifles I've ever encountered.

I never could get into M1A's...

Put me down for a FAL if I want a blaster, AR10 if I wanted a do-it-all gun with a precision bias.
