Any tips? I'm really nervous. I was never a good test taker in school and I'm afraid it's going to carry over to this. I've got my drivers license and I've had it for almost 6 years now, so it should be all stuff I do now in a car with some motorcycle questions thrown in. Any questions some of you got tripped up on so I can watch out for them?

Read the booklet at the DOL and you will pass, most of my questions were on distances and shit like that.

what do you mean "taking the learner's permit tomorrow"?

there's a test to get the permit? i thought there was just a test to get the certification on you license.

Some states you can get a learners permit for motorcycles, you have to be riding next to someone that has their full license or something for the year or it's limited to bike size (cc).

When I went to get my learners permit for cars when I was 15 I took the test and they had an optional motorcycle also learners permit that was just a test with different distances and more questions about lane positioning. I took it and passed and they still didn't give it to me because of some bs reason about how Florida doesn't give out learners permits for bikes anymore.

BTW, I fucking hate those tests, such stupid questions. If you're coming up to a stop sign and want to turn right, which position in the lane should you be? :hsugh:

So I passed, which is awesome. Not that it was difficult. I was just over thinking it. In NYS, to get your drivers license, you need to pass a written test to get a "Permit" to be allowed to start learning. Same with motorcycles. By law, with out a license, you must have your Permit and be accompanied by a fully licensed driver/rider 21 or older. For me, my friend is letting me learn on his bike and he'll be in a car, and we just have to stay within 1/4 mile of each other.

The whole test was about safety and drinking while driving/riding. I got all of those right, but they have about 5 questions about motorcycles on it, and I missed one. The question was something like "When you get a flat tire: " then it was multiple choice. I said that the steering would become heavy, although the correct answer is the back of the bike would wobble. Although technically, if the front tire pops, then the back won't be wobbling, you'll probably be wobbling on the ground.

    Can you ride without supervision?
In NY, they recommend at least 10 hours of driving time on the freeway and at night for practice.

Wow... that's crazy. What does it take to get the permit? If it's just a written test, then it's kinda scary to think that they can do that then they can just hop on a bike and learn how to ride.

    PA also has permit restrictions
    No Passengers
    No Night riding
    No Crossing state lines

And up until 3 years ago there was no test to get a permit walk in sign a form you now have a motorcycle permit and you could renew it as many times as you want. Once this law changed there were guys int he safety course who had been riding 20+ years on just a permit
Now PA has a written test and only allows you to renew your permit twice, for a total time of 1 year on a permit

I could understand not getting a license, because there was probably no need to. If you don't take passengers, and you don't ride at night, then you're fine. I can't wait to start learning, though!

You're required to be within 1/4 mile of a licensed rider. They can be in a car or on a bike, as long as they are near you to observe how you ride.

Although if you go out riding by yourself and you get pulled over, it's very easy to claim the person you were riding with was 1/4 mile ahead of you, so they won't give you a ticket for riding with out a licensed rider.

that sounds like a HUGE waste of time, and like it would be completely ineffective toward making the new rider any safer.

Yeah, although I don't mind having a licensed rider near me so that if I do something that shouldn't be done, he can tell me.
