Like it says, I'll be taking a girl to the range for her first time tomorrow. Not only her first range trip, but her first time shooting any guns period. Apparently it was a new years resolution or something and she wants me to show her the ropes. We'll be taking my xd9 and a .22 rifle I have, but is there anything I should take note of? Any similar experiences? Horror stories? I assume just go over the basic safety rules, etc...

Yeah that's what I figured, shouldn't be too hard. Any tips for easing her into the xd?

My GF learned this the hard way. Spent .22 brass down her shirt and gave her a nice little burn on the boob.

My fault really, I didnt even think of it.

i like to give a tutorial at home of how to load and unload a gun with snap caps. gun safety is followed here including pointing the gun in a direction that we deem safe and watching trigger discipline

    stress the 4 rules

don't worry much about accuracy and "pointers" just be safe

be sure she doesn't put her thumb behind the slide sometime

i like to load just 1 round at first so when they turn around to look for approval of their first shot they don't point a loaded gun at me

i like to load just 2 rounds for the next shot to be sure the trigger reset doesn't freak them out and they don't rip off 3 shots without meaning to and do something dumb

i generally like to stand just to back and side of the shooter so if they do start to turn around or do something bad i'm there to block their arms from sweeping all the way around

past that nothing really comes to mind. remember the goal is to have fun and be safe (this is both the 4 rules and eyes and ears).

    Nice.

Also, i try not to leave their side, to help em with whatever questions they might have and make sure they don't do anything unsafe.

Really, really, really ease em into it with the 22. With complete noobs, they are gonna have massive trigger jerk if you start em with a 9mm anything. If only they would allow silencer use in this state... :hs:

Go over the basics at home including safety, handling, sight picture, dry firing while practicing sight picture
    Buy a .22lr handgun
    Wear double ear protection

I'd take a basic shooting course with an instructor.

Yep. You should spend some time with her with the guns in a safe environment away from the range before you go.

The only thing I can recommend is make sure she holds the gun tightly. We went shooting once with a female cop and she tried MG's G29. It ended up over her head and pointed back at us with her finger on the trigger after her first shot. Obviously this girl's not going to be firing nuclear missiles on her first range trip, but it's something that can happen if she's not expecting the recoil.

I completely second Soybomb's post, this is what MG does, and I now do with first-time shooters to acquaint them with the guns. Let the girl get all the silliness and self conscious behavior out of her system at home before going to the range.

    Everything that Soybomb said.

    Stress safety something fierce.

I just took my mother to the range for the first time (fuck you guys. You're not getting pics) and she shot my MKIII and the XD(M). When she shot the xd I had her sit down and post up on some sandbags.

I've been over gun safety time and time again with my wife... but still have to keep a VERY close eye on her at the range. Just last week, when her 22 pistol failed to fire, she was waving the gun around with her finger still on the trigger as she tried to get the bad round out of the gun...

I need to bring my gf to the range.

All I have is my AR though. Dunno if I should start her out on that.
