Took my class not too long ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

We had 3 people that had never fired a gun before in my class. Scary.

Had one of those. My range is top notch, they spent half an hour with him on basics, then walked him through qualifying with a Ruger Mk II. I just don't see the attraction for people who know nothing about firearms to go to a CCW class. It's like somebody going to boot camp graduation without having gone through boot camp. Tail before the horse.

Edit: I see nothing wrong with new blood in our sport, just can't follow the logic that leads them there, sometimes.

Because they want to have a pistol for self-defense and figured the CHL class would teach them.

I doubt in any pistol class everyone is of equal skill level. I'd consider NRA Basic Pistol and CHL the two lowest classes you can take so you'll get all kind of people in them.

woot! i just got back from my CCW class....asides from the paperwork and the grueling firearm statutes lecture, it was pretty interesting. Everybody in the class was experienced w/ firearms but the instructor still had to give us a visual lesson on the parts and operation of a revolver and a semi-auto. The example pieces were a taurus .357 mag revolver and a sig sauer 229.

the awesome part is i kicked ass on the "shooting qualification"...the instructor actually patted me on the back for my grouping :hsd:
i shot about 2 magazines worth and he looked downrange at my target and went "yea man i think youre qualified, you can unload and take a break"
I was however, very surprised to see about 3 people in the class fail the shooting qualifier almost immediately.

The only shitty part is the guy who administers the fingerprinting couldnt make it cuz he was in peru
So now i have to wait till next week to go back and get fingerprinted and then mail all my shit in for my license.

the class required all the students to demonstrate basic firearm operational competency as well as accuracy @ 7 yards. I think its graded on a pass/fail basis now, you basically need to keep all your shots within the 9 ring or tighter. Some of the students that failed had shots all over the paper and the instructor failed them. I tore a ragged hole in the center
:) And with my glock subcompact nonetheless...most of the people were using full sized pistols or .22's haha.

because most self-defense situations have you shooting 50 yards

I quoted him, I'm asking him.

He's laughing, but last I recall, he doesn't even own a gun of his own, therefore, has no room to mamoru.
