I live in the country and off the main road 1/4 mile. I have dogs and a fenced yard. The dogs bark at strangers. The dogs bark at other animals. I know the difference in the barks it is very noticeable. I have a couple of motion lights in the yard and a few large "guard" lights out around the out buildings on switches. I keep the lights off as I like it very dark for sleeping.

2am and the dogs are barking the "stranger bark". Do you just turn on the light and hope the trespasser leaves?

I could easily walk out the front door ( the dogs would stop barking and come around front) but I would be out of sight to the back of the place and sneak around with a weapon and have the wife flip on the lights and try and catch the trespassers?

What if its 10 people? With AK-47's. And ski masks. Do you live in a relatively nice area?

    night vision ftw.

First I would look outside to see if I can see anyone then I would go investigate it

    lights off then ?

I know the smarter thing to do would be just flip the lights on and avoid any trouble.

That situation would most likely not allow me to catch the persons.

Lights would probably scare them off yes, I'de go with no lights other then whatever ones the sensors already got tripped. Have the wife ready to call police if you do catch someone, if you scare them off they may just come back another time when your not home.

I have thought of mounting an intercom down in the barns and just getting set up at the house with my .308. Yell freeze I have a gun and will shot over the intercom and flipping on all the outside guard lights. Would be like shooting prairie dogs. Fire a few warning shots and call the cops?

Going outside should be your last resort. I seriously doubt there's anything worth dieing for in your yard so just stay inside. Get a gun, hit the lights and look out the corner of the window (don't silhouette yourself). Be ready to call the cops if you see someone outside.

The house would be dark I would just turn on the outside lights. This is a good idea. Yet I want to catch them.

you're not a cop. stay put, unless you know for sure your home and/or life is threatened.

Your desire to catch someone should not get you killed. Stuff is replaceable; your life and your family are not.

    Arm yourself and stay inside.

Lights not only SOMETIMES scare people off, but they also help you see out, and help them NOT see in, due to the mirroring effect on the glass (like when you try to use the camera flash against glass, and can't see through it).

If you're just itching to spend money, like some of the people in this thread think you are, get more lights, get an alarm system, get better fences, and let your man-eating dog loose in the yard. Going outside might help your vengeful side, but it doesn't help your soft, fleshy underbelly side when you take a round in the gut because you left the concealment of your abode to approach an unknown threat with the lights outside of your house silhouetting you.

remote mounted spotlight, and other lights with swtiches inside... or you could go all tacticool, and get a flare gun like 993, and just pop an illumination flare to scare'em off...

bump fireing a mag would have a pretty good effect too, but be sure to get a decent flashhider, don't want them knowing where you are:hsugh:
