My sister just got into photography school and needs to buy a camera. The School will not let her use her 20D.

T1i and 40D are the same price from what I've found. I've heard ppl say that the 40D has more manual control, but what manual control does it have over the T1i?

For one, why will they not let her use the 20? For two, get the 40D.

The real question is...what does 40D or t1i offer the 20D cannot deliver?

    A) Your sister wants to upgrade her old camera by giving school as excuse

    B) Ken Rockwell is the instructor

    C) All of the above

Don't know they can choose from T1i, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5D Mk2. Theres also a lot of crap they want her to buy that are unecessary, about 10k (new) worth of stuff.

Most ppl will say the 40D, Why though? besides the better body, top LCD and faster shutter.. what else is there?

I'm thinking image quality will be the same only the 40D will not have video and less megapixels...

if a 40D will get her more respect than a rebel... than thats enough.

I'd really question a photography school that wouldn't allow a student to use a 20D but would require a 40D... Is she buying it through the school?

    Sounds fucked to me.

  11. T1i is only good if you are looking for HD video, the 40D is a clear winner...

Both are crop sensors and can go up to ISO 3200, but after a while you'll want the 40D for the feel... the Rebel is small and always will feel small in your hands.

as an employee for the technology department of an art/photography school, this a HUGE load of horseshit. I can see a recommended camera body list, but in no way shape or form a 'required' list.

However, there might be some merit to the stuff you deem to be unecessary. If there are classes being taught on how to use specific gear (like say a light meter), than I can understand it being required that you own one, and again, the instructor may recommend one, but should in no way be able to require a specific model of one.

If the student can show they can achieve the class competencies with gear that does not fall on the list, they cannot force you to spend your money.

Funny that the list quoted only has Canon cameras on it. I'm 99% sure this list is someone in the school's personal preference gear sheet. It has no authority.

Or maybe because it's obvious that you can't study/practice the art of photography with Nikon gear :mamoru:

Here is the mandatory list they gave her in addition to the camera. I am assuming they selected those cameras so they can affectively use all these gadgets. I'm not a pro photographer so I don't know.

The school does have a 2 year wait list just to get in, so it has to be a decent school.

    Brooks?

thats a pretty badass list. It all makes sense. None of it would be considered unecessary, imo...

I stand by my stance that a lot of this is recommended, and she could easily buy Nikon gear or Sony gear and not have a problem, but the truth is, the 20d is old. Camera bodies are pieces of equipment that need to be upgraded... If she's serious about doing this for a career, and she's waited 2 years to get into this school, you minus whale tell her to go all out.

    Fuck no it's not Brooks

Brooks has a mandatory list of accessories in general but nothing like specific model numbers or manufacturers
