for the past few days, the family computer has been popping up with this "system alert"

if I click on the icon, a browser window pops up and takes me to that website at the bottom of that picture.

McAfee SiteAdvisor says that that site has quite a few downloads that are considered spyware or various other ad/malware

apparently my step-dad downloaded the virusheat porgram so I uninstalled it and did a McAfee virus/malware/spyware scan and it didn't find anything, but the "System Alert!" thing keeps popping up every 5 minutes.

any ideas on what this is and/or how I can make it stop?

well I downloaded Ad-Aware, updated the definitions and then scanned the computer.
It found some malware so I deleted the three things it found and the various tracking cookies it found, but the original "System Alert" message is still popping up.

    this is getting really annoying

I probably could have had some fun with P07 with this, if he had in fact told you to download an app that has malware in it.

But that's not what he said at all.

He told you to follow the manual removal instructions.

Apparently, that would be on the bottom half of the page you neglected to check out.

ok so i screwed up. i do that a lot
I apologize to P07 for my reply.

but like i said in my first post: virus heat is gone. it's no longer on my computer. virus heat is not the problem.
the problem i'm trying to fix is the "system alert" message that keeps popping up.
ALL malware/spyware has been removed from the computer, I just want to figure out how to let the computer know that so it will stop coming up with that message.

    d/l smitfraudfix, follow the instructions
    http://security.comprolive.com/2006/12/smitfraudfix.html

then use hijackthis for possible remnants
    then use a registry cleaner

you obviously do not know how this works. All of it is *NOT* gone. That message is being displayed by an executable that is STILL RUNNING. Which means you have NOT gotten rid of it all. Follow ALL of the directions to remove it.
