This was something I alluded to when I was trying to give examples of having the "spark" in a relationship, however I only recently learned the name of the concept.

    Read this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronicity

    1) discuss instances of synchronicity in your relationships. I don't necessarily need specific examples, but does it happen ever, or never?

    2) feel free to logically argue against synchronicity being anything other than random coincidence

The reason I ask is because now that I know what it's called, looking back at my recent relationship, it occurred quite often. Psychologically, that added to the "omg this is special" soulmate/planets aligning/fate type of feeling.

Of course it could be all random coincidence :dunno:

"Synchronicity is the experience of two or more events that are apparently causally unrelated occurring together in a meaningful manner. To count as synchronicity, the events should be unlikely to occur together by chance."

I have no experiences of that.

Sometimes I feel extremely lucky because of Emily and because we ran into each other. But that's the closest to it.

The rest of that wiki page reads like a post-modernism essay... ugh

can you explain what you mean by this?

only thing i've ever heard of as being postmodern is art and architecture.

Post-modernism exists in writing. It means different things. Sometimes it just means "flawed characters," which is fine. Sometimes it refers to, basically, "bullshitting about writing'" and is the worst thing that ever happened to literature. Post-modernism in that sense looks like this:

Don't always think that just because you don't understand something, it is complex; sometimes it just doesn't make sense.

    thanks JJJ

sometimes I find myself reading shit like that and say "damnit if they just worded this better I could understand it"

so basically the writer trying to sound too "smart" for his/ her readers when its not really necessary to use such big terms or complex writing styles?

You're really reaching pretty far in an attempt to convince yourself that your relationship wasn't a failure and/or still thinking you should try to get back with her again.

Instead of trying so desperately to relate anything and everything in life to logic-based principles and creating a conceptual mindfuck in the process, why don't you move on to figuring out a cure for your oneitis? It would serve you far better than clinging to your codependency issues like a life raft.

I've experienced this a TONNNN with bf. It does add to the strong feelings I have for him, like, wow...this is HAS to be the "one" type thing.

A human being will try to make anything mean something. We are complex emotional beings looking for meaning to a somewhat meaningless existance.

I think stuff like that is all coincidence.

If you like someone you will assign whatever you want to regular old coincidence. The more you like them, the harder you will try to make connections.

It has nothing to do with wanting to get back with my ex.

I also don't know how to explain synchronicity logically.

It is necessary to use highly abstract wording when you are discussing something complex... But it is also necessary if you have no actual content to deliver.

"Postmodernism Disrobed" by Richard Dawkins will be right up your alley :)

In the same vein, there was the Sokal affair that blew up a couple of years ago in the academic field. One of the reasons I hate philosophy is that it usually sounds more complicated than it actually is. There's nothing like straightforward scientific articles for me... It's one of the reasons why I don't read much apart from scientific articles :o
