It's on my list of "would buy new" bikes, and that list is VERY small.
the 650 gets close to 50 mpg, can handle fireroads, washes, and trails (with more aggressive tires) then turn around, slap on the hard luggage and haul you across country.
I've been watching prices for used 1000cc models to see if any deals jump up.

friend of mine just traded in his 92 Honda VFR 750 on a brand-new VStrom DL650, and he is so glad he did, those are really nice bikes. And if you are buying one, might as well buy new, as they see to hold their value pretty well, and you won't save much at all buying used.

Yeah it's not for me, it's my friend that's buying one. He's pumped about getting it. He's going to try and get the one with ABS but he's not sure they'll have that before he's ready to buy.

When he says "they", is he taking about the dealership? Because the DL650 ABS has been out for a couple years now. And if that's the one he really wants, tell him to wait instead of rushing a purchase that he may end up regretting.

If I'm not mistaken, the VStrom is pretty much a multi purpose SV650 or 1000.

ahhhh, I see what you meant now. My bad. thought you meant the SV was a multi purpose. DOH

yep, it's pretty much an SV enduro with upright seating position.

I love the SVs and their powerband, and I've been wanting a more 'general purpose' bike lately, so the VStroms are on my list. I love my SV1000S, so I know the core of the bike is strong, I've never really heard anything about about them.

Yep, he (my friend) is going to buy new only. He's not interested in saving money because this bike is everything he wants and it's affordable for him brand new.
Oh yeah....I'm a firm believer in buying what you want the first time. I've never been one to really upgrade because I tend to be lazy as shit, even when it's something I really want....so I put my upgrades off for a long time.
