It might just have unseated Batman Begins as my favourite movie.
Watching it was like how I felt watching the first Superman with Christopher Reeves when I was like 8 years old.

Glad Bryan Singer will have a hit on his hands. Is it true they took him off X-Men 3 because of Halle Berry? If so, Fuck you Halle.... anally.... without lube.

Is James Marsen's appearrance here also why Cyclops was killed off early?

Superman kicked so much ass. We went to the midnight opening show and the theatre was full of energy. Go see it man!

My thoughts on the movie --SPOILERS

Well I went and saw it and I take back almost everything I thought was going to be bad about it. The kid who did Jimmy was excellent, the effects were kick ass, and I got chills when the opening music started.

However, IMO they totally took a wrong turn with the son of superman subplot. To begin with, it is implied that he slept with Lois, however she has no idea that he is Clark. This was supposed to be a quasi sequal to Superman 1 and 2 (where Lois finds out who Supes is) and yet he comes back and she has no clue(yet she slept with him). It just makes no sense. Also, I think that the time they spent fleshing out the kid's story, they could have added a minor villain (braniac, metallo, parasite, etc) for the next movie. As it is, assuming they do another one, it looks like yet again Lex will be the main baddie. Plus with the exception of Kingdom Come/The Kingdom there has not been an even semi-important alternate universe story where Supes has a son.

I know it doesn't follow any comic canon, but IMHO they should have scrapped the son and picked a more interesting route to the fans. Because of that, I think it rates just behind Batman Begins and just ahead of Spiderman (wasn't a huge fan of the movie, but it was still good).

Oh and I still don't like the freaking new costume colors and how it looks plastic:madfawk: :o

i think they were going for a quasi-leather look. i thought it looked good. but thats just my nerdom speaking. and the beginning seemed too much like the intro to star wars for my taste. but hearing that music sure brought memories back.

three thumbs up. (two hand thumbs and one toe thumb, p.s. only really good porn gets four)

After watching it the second time... and the 'new' factor wearing off Batman Begins still edges it out as my favourite...but definitely close.
Spiderman 2 being a distant third.

    My observations about the movie....

    spoiler

I thought the kid having super powers was pretty stupid. Actually, kids in general usually fuck up a movie for me. They're not cute, they're annoying, dammit. It was a bit too long with no real climax. I'd rather have seen him fight metallo or parasite or ANYONE rather than a BIG ASS CONTINENT. The whole "falling from the sky in a Christ-like pose" and then having his kid say "I like him mommy" and kiss him on the forehead made me squirm in my seat. Also, I can't help but imagine superman as the way Alex Ross draws him. Barrel-chested and all. Routh just seems so small. :hs: I thought Spacey was great but his girl just annoyed the hell out of me. It's all really nit-picking for me but it adds up. All in all, I thought it was an ok movie. :hs:

God, that was so nerdy of me

I actually don't like the way Alex Ross draws him... might as well cast a George Reeves' double (original TV Superman) as Superman then.

Anyway one thing I was happy about was that Superman didn't recover as soon as Lois kissed him or told him the kid was his son. That was my main complaint about the Matrix. In fact the hospital scene remeinded me of the Matrix after Neo was shot and 'died'.

I thought it was good, not GREAT, but good. I guess I had problems with the portrayal of Lois Lane having a kid - especially since Superman had always skirted around the issue over if he had ever had sex with Lois, at least until the new Up, Up, and Away series.

I didn't care much for the kid and thought Routh was too skinny to be Supes, but otherwise it was great.

If you go back and watch Superman 2, after he kisses Lois at the end of the movie, it makes her forget that Clark Kent and Superman are the same person and presumably that they slept with each other in the Fortress of Solitude.

Batman Begins and Superman Returns are two different movies.

Also, from what I understand Singer took the Superman movie over X Men because he basically said who wouldn't want to touch the Superman film after it has been so many years of not being around? Basically a new sheet of paper to work on, something that no one has done for some years, like 20 right?!

Loved Superman Returns, was a great movie, although I think a bit more action was in order. Howeverm, with that said, it did meet my expectations. Do not try to put Batman Begins next to this movie, although they are both of the same superhero type of genre, Christopher Nolan did Batman. So it will be done a different way of course!

And I think Routh fits the bill. I don't picture Superman as a hulking beast of a man, or else how would he be able top pull off the whole unnoticeable Clark Kent role? You can't hide super broad shoulder underneath a work jacket can you now Timber?

All in all, good movie, would watch again!
