I'm taking Computer Programming as an elective, and I'm capable of writing very basic programs. Anyways, I'm wondering how to take a solution/project and turning it into a working .exe? I know that it generates one when you debug, but that's not a real .exe I'm to understand?

the debug .exe is a real program, but with added symbols for debugging information. If you want the lightweight .exe, go to Build -> Configuration Manager then next to your project select "Release" as the config instead of debug. It will generate a "release" folder under your project folder instead of the debug.
