From the courtroom to the farm, a tragic story **PICS**

So this summer I had an internship with the Law Center at MCRD Parris Island. It was a great experience, I got a little trial experience and met a lot of great people. Only problem was that it was supposed to be 10 weeks, but got knocked down to 4 weeks and I couldn't find another summer internship so late in the game. So off to South Carolina I went...

Arriving at Parris Island. I never saw a deer the whole time I was there.

My office. Its pretty big because the Captain that usually had it is attached to some unit in Iraq. I had a great view of everyone on their way to the shitter.

On my last weekend there I decided to take in a recruit graduation. Very cool experience.

Private First Class Hummer. This dog just "graduated" meaning he went to some of the recruit evolutions. The old buldog got retired because he had a bad hip and the handler had to drag him around during ceremonies.

One of the captains had a boat so we went out to a lake Whiley? one weekend. We went to some sandbar by Beuafort pretty much every weekend.

So then my internship ended and I had to come back to Florida and unemployment. My neighbor has a farm so he offered me a job helping out. Pay isn't great but I make my own hours.

The cows don't really know me yet so they just stare at me.

The bulk of my day is jsut odd job type stuff. I had to clear a fenceline with some huge weeds. About 15'x200 ft'. It sucks.

I made a miserable failure of a thread in the main forum about my summer internship at PI with summer pictures.

I should have posted it in here, probably would have goten more love. Well maybe not since Accord can't post anymore.

They said it made it up to 6 one year. The speed limit is only 25mph there to, so I never really understood what the big deal was.

Haha, I was amazed at how many parents showed up to their child's graduation wearing a cutoff t-shirt. I can just imagine a new Marine being so excited to see his family and then seeing the father in a cutoff t-shirt and thinking "damn that's nasty".

I just finished my third semester (UF had a spring class). There isn't really a link to the internship, its just something my OSO knew about. Its only available to already commissioned Marines. Last year at On Campus Interviews however, the Army JAG was passing information out about their internship opportunities. They have a really neat program that you can do for two months I believe, even if you aren't in the military. Another neat thing I noticed with their program was the cool places you could get stationed. I'm not sure how many spots they had, but some of them were overseas, which I thought was pretty cool.

I basically got bounced around to all the different legal branches.

The main stuff I did was with prosecution. The first major case I helped with was an administrative seperation for a recruiter that had totalled 3 govs in less than a year. The final one was totalled when he hit a light pole in a mall parking lot going 55 mph. I got to examine some witnesses in this trial which I thought was pretty cool (something interns outside the military world will never come close to doing). That guy was seperated with less than honorable I believe. The jury actually wanted him to stay in, but when they were asking the defendant questions, he never said he accepted responsibility so the booted him.

Another case I worked on involved another recruiter that was dipping the DEP. He had sexual relations with like 8 female poolees, bought them alcohol, drove the gov drunk, just a ton of things. He was lucky because they were doing a standard discharge on him so he faces a max of a year in the brig, if it was a general court martial all the offenses added up to like 130 years or so.

I helped with a couple of UA cases. Also, jsut before I left there was a DI misconduct case coming through, but I felt like it was blown a little out of proportion. Some DIs through a green belt party, basically trashing the barracks by the rifle range. Firefighters arrived, took some pictures, recruits had it cleaned up within 2 hours by the time to officer of the day arrived. I had to come up with the charge sheet for that and was having a pretty hard time finding anything against the UCMJ. I think I just recommended page 11s for that.

PI doesn't have a huge caseload. Places like Lejeune have tons of cases. If I don't get a cushy civilian internship next summer, I'll probably try and hit up Lejeune.

Also worked on some civ law stuff. One question dealt with whether the PI wives club could solicit prizes from local businesses for a golf tournament for Marines. One was about transported weapons over state borders during hurricane evacuation. One dealt with citizenship of a recruit that was adopted from Russia when he was a child.

All in all it was a very good experience. I was just hitting my stride when my 30 days was up. If I was there longer they were going to let me start handling my own cases rather than second chairing at trial.
