Cliffs: Got hold of a car that has been garaged (not even turned on) 6+ months. Would it be worth to keep?

A friend recently gave me a 2002 Mazda Protege5. The car is pretty good condition except for a slight front bumper blemish from an accident she got into.

Here's the thing. The car has been sitting in a garage for at least 6 months without it being turned on. Battery is obviously shot.

I haven't heard good things about cars that haven't been used for extended periods of time.

The car has 84k and 3 months before being garaged my mechanic changed out the timing belt and water pump.

Anything I can do? Tune up? flush out all the fluids? new spark plugs?

I drove the car on a regular basis before it was garaged and it was a decent daily driver. Good on gas, pretty reliable, looks pretty good and it has a nice aftermarket sound system.

Would it be worth to keep it or is it just going to be headache after headache?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I bought my 300zx and it had not been driven in 2 years!

What I did was swap the battery, engine oil, and transmission fluid. Check the coolant and brake fluid (Swap if needed). The biggest issue to be concerned about is dry rot. I had to replace a few hoses to get the A/C to work. As for the tune up, I would only do it if the car is driving funny.

Other than that... if it drives fine, why not keep it?

my friend had a red one, wagon even... that was beat way harder than that thing...ran absolutely fine... tires might be flat spotted a lil...

i left my 86 MR2 in my parking spot for several months at a time and all it needed was a push start and some air in the tires to get rid of the flat spot "wobble" and sideways sliding through gravel we went.

my daily driver just died and ive been lookin hard for something affordable

    can you spot the problem?

6 months OMG you should totally send that thing to the junkyard :hsugh:

I know people with cars they drive maybe a few times a year the rest of the time it sits, besides charging the battery they start right up

Yeah it's pretty filthy. I don't think the car has seen soap in well over a year. Even though you can't see in the pics there are cobwebs all over it
