I just accepted a job as a DBA for a company that uses Oracle and PHP. I'm just coming out of Uni so I know I've got a lot to learn and although I'm familiar with SQL and PHP, I'm very nervous about this job.

Do you guys have any suggestions on books to help me learn how to be a good DBA or suggestion on Oracle and PHP??

    Thanks.

We use oracle where I work, and it's fairly straight forward.

I have this link saved from a couple of years ago when I was trying to pick up on it, so I don't know how up to date it is.

But there's all sorts of good downloads in there.

Also, I don't know if these are still in that site, but if any of them interest you I could upload them for you. If they're not still in there or whatever.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I love having a lot of reference materials because I've found that someones end-all-be-all reference sometimes doesn't work for me.

Doc thanks for the offer. When I have a bit more time I'll be sure to check out that link and let you know.

Sweet...congrats on the job and good luck. I'm in the same boat as you (just graduated).

Now if only I could find a full-time job :wtc:

Thanks man. Yeah I'm happy about getting my first job but kinda disappointed that it wasn't my first choice. The other company went with a different candidate. But this is a good opportunity so I'm going to give it my all and learn as much as I can.

It's also really nice to have a focus to my efforts as opposed to trying to learn so many different things all at once.

Yes...graduated in May with a BS in Computer Information Systems (Networking emphasis). I've applied to several places, but they would rather have someone who has certifications than a degree. :wtc:

Yeah most rejections I got were because they wanted someone with specific programming experience. If I were more skilled with .Net and C# I think I could land an job in about a week....there are soo many of these being advertised here.

I have had excellent experience with several WROX books across varying products and languages. If I need to learn a new technology, and I need something hard-copy, I will look first at Wrox books.

Yeah I've looked at some of their books also, different topics, and have generally been impressed with them. However, the comments to both of those books mention code that doesn't work, grammatical errors and other scary things.

I dunno...the reviews sound pretty bad. Do you have experience with these 2 books??

I'm not trying to suck up, but I would take the word of Jolly over some of the dingleberries on amazon.com, anyday.

I would tend to agree but when more than one person reports code that doesn't work I start to get suspicious.

Yeah me too....we studied C++ as the main language for my degree but I also used Java for my OO class and Web Server Prog class.

I actually was looking for Java jobs around town but there don't seem to be that many in OKC. Certainly not compared to the amount of C# and .Net jobs....those are very plentiful.

Anyways, anyone have additional suggestions on resources to learn these technologies??
