Like title says looking for a hand gun for fun/have at house.

Don't want a pea shoot (22) but nothing huge either.

Budget is no issue. but nothing outrages.

Ideally something the wife could enjoy at the range also.

Grew up with guns, ect.. but not sure what's out there anymore.

    Thanks

  2. When you say "have at house" do you mean something for self defense at home? If so that would rule out the smaller plinking calibers.

The advice you're going to get here from people who know what they're talking about is to go to a range and rent a bunch of stuff and see how you like shooting it. Not that every gun that you shoot well is equally good, but it'll give you an idea of what you like and what you don't like.

Start off with Glocks, Springfield XD, S&W M&P series guns, and nice 1911s.

As far as calibers go, if it's a defensive gun you're likely looking at something 9mm, .40s&w, .45ACP, or if you're baller 10mm.

Yeah def to something with some stopping power,

probably a good idea to hit the range and try out some guns.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

  4. Yeah, but nobody ever read it, and people asked the question all the time anyways.

  6. If you don't intend to carry it you don't have to worry as much about size and weight, and you can focus your search on the full size guns, which are usually more pleasant to shoot and are easier to aim due to their longer sight radius.

  7. You don't have to delete it. If you have specific questions we can answer them.

Rent a bunch of guns and shoot, or head to the range with a bunch of ammo and a good attitude, and talk to some friendly folks, they would most likely let you shoot what they have (or get on a local forum and see if they'll meet you at the range).

Attend a class that fulfills the requirement for the permit. If you take the right class, the instructor will have several guns for you to try out. Get the permit out of the way (it doesn't take long with the new all-electric express process, got mine in 7 calendar days, contact department of ag & consumer services). That also allows you to take home a gun you purchase the same day, no waiting period.

Glock 19, Springfield XD, etc. There are a ton out there that will serve good double duty as a carry piece and a home defense gun.

    glock 26
    S&W 642
    Ruger LCP

    if you want to carry
the LCP is only a .380 though, but well placed shots with a decent hollow point it should still do the job

i'm liking my new glock 26, small enough for conceal carry and it will be more comfy to shoot at the range when i get the mag extender (which is probably waiting at home right now)

depending on the wife you may not want to go much bigger than 9mm if you want her to enjoy shooting it

  15. None of those guns are especially fun to shoot. Since the original question mentioned fun and using for home defense, with CCW a possibility later I'd lean towards the larger guns that are better at fun/HD while still useable for CCW.

true but a full size frame won't be something they'd want to carry if they do go for concealment

  17. I'd look for a midsize gun like a G19 or something similar.

    Get a fullsize/compact gun now and a compact/subcompact later.
