When matching an amp to a subwoofer for RMS power, does the amp rating assume 2 subs or just 1?

    I'm looking at getting 2-JL10w7s:
    recommended RMS 300-500W

the amp i'm looking at JL500/1v2 is rated at:
    500 W RMS @ 1.5 ohm - 4 ohm (11V-14.5V)

so would 1 amp be good enough to run both subs or should i get one for each sub? i'm not looking for any competition volume bass where i shake houses around me while driving, but good sound quality bass.

you're not looking for competition-grade yet you're running W7's? Why? You'd probably be better off with some W3's or even some W1's.

I'd say you'd want a 1000/1v2 for two W7's. And that will rattle your eye balls out.

if you want more reasonable bass, some w3's will work great.

:werd: W7's are friggin ridiculous, if you've never heard ehm before, you most likely don't want 2 :o

You could always do one sub and match it to the JL500 amp. I figure you're getting a package deal though since W7's are usually expensive as all hell.

    -W7 10's arent that loud.
-The W7 isnt an SPL woofer.
-The W7 was designed with sound quality in mind.
-Two W7 10's on a single 500/1 is enough for a daily driver. In a good box they'll probably give you comfortable output and sound damn good.

On that note, W7's are over priced IMO.
I havent heard any of the V3 stuff, but past W3's didnt sound that great IMO. Got loud for what they were, still overpriced IMO. W1's are a moderate-high priced entry level sub. However, they sound pretty good.

To answear your question: An amp is rated for power output. If you wire your speakers in the "correct" manner they will share the power equally. This means that a 500w amp powering two subs will give them 250w RMS each.

You dont HAVE to match factory RMS power. Underpowering speakers just means they cant get as loud. Overpowering speakers means that you have overhead and it is less likely that your amp will introduce distortion into the output signal.

not really.. it's just bad because most people will buy an underpowered amp then max out the gain and clip the hell out of the sub.

Underpowering is fine as long as you aren't clipping the signal.

most users will clip when they underpower their speakers. it kinda goes hand-in-hand for the most part.

I wouldnt say that. Rice boys and guedos wanting to show off their system might, but if you listen on a normal level, 500w and 2 10's is plenty to get you comfortably loud with a little extra if you want it. If wont be a ground pounder system, but it will be close. If he tries to use it as a ground pounder he may clip the amp.

Underpowing doesnt blow speakers, bad users blow speakers.

may I ask why you are going with JL audio?

IMHO JL is over priced big time, they are selling their name and do not offer any distinct advantage over other mid to high end speakers.

although I agree that you can get other great stuff for the same or less money, JL is still very good. I like that they're easy to buy locally and have a warranty. I have owned several JL amps and subs, and they have all been excellent. So, although I could go with RE or something else, I will definitely look at what JL has to offer me for my next setup.

Let me clarify, i wasn't trying to bash on JL Audio, I was just saying for the money you could go farther with other brands.
