the current routine i'm on requires me to do leg extensions. can/should i replace them with something else? the routine also has me doing 2 sets of db lunges in the same workout. i was thinking maybe front squats but it's 15 reps and i remember reading form most likely will suffer.

    Leg Extension Risks:

    1. Increased patellofemoral joint reaction force, knee movement, and joint stress in the most commonly used range of motion.

    2. Reduced hamstrings activity.

    3. Reduced VMO activity and late onset of firing.

    4. Non-existent hip adductor and abductor contribution.

    5. Increased rectus femoris firing.

    6. Constant ACL tension.

    7. Higher patellar ligament, quadriceps tendon, and patellofemoral and tibiofemoral forces with the most commonly utilized loading parameters.

    8. Increased lateral patellar deviation.

    9. Insufficient involvement of surrounding joints to ensure optimal functioning.

    10. Poor training economy (no carryover to closed-chain performance from open-chain exercises).

    Leg Extension Benefits:

    1. Will give you a good pump

I could see how a lot of those would be bad if leg ext were your primary quad exercise, but if its just a secondary exercise, especially if done with lightweights (@ high reps), would they still be as "bad" since you're reducing stress by using lighter weight and involving other joints & muscles with your primary exercise?

if you lift 5lbs 100 times, you've lifted 500lbs total. if you lift 500lbs once, you've lifted 500lbs total. A little damage x high reps can be just as bad as a lot of damage in low reps.

why would you want to? it's hard for me to think of a more poor risk/reward ratio lift.

i'll occasionally do them but never hard/heavy and more just to get a quick pump at the end of a leg day, maybe 1 or 2 sets.

i view leg ext like upright rows.. 2 of the most potentially destructive exercises, the benefits are not enough to keep them in consistently.

Nothing I posted had anything to do with quadriceps strength in relation to hamstring strength.
