Ok I understand the basics of subnetting, but there are questions i get stuck at which are like the this:

Given an IP address 21.147.62.13 and a subnet mask of 255.255.192.0 how can i find out the address of host #14763 on subnet 811

Anyone can give me some pointers on the easiest way to deal with such questions?

    Much appreciated.

The idea of teaching things such as this is to prove that you know why you do things. If you know how to calculate the subnet of a given host without the help of a computer, then you probably truly understand how and why we use subnetting at all. If I am an employer looking for a network admin, I think I'd rather hire one that knows the ins and outs of subnetting by hand, rather than one who knows how to do it by computer only.

there is a trick to questions like that but I dont remember it off hand, you should be able to do something like this:

find network address, add (811*subnetsize), convert host to binary, add one for subnet address and combine.

    :mb: :mb:

Questions like that are a pain in the ass they could have said 6th subnet just as easily and still caught the people who don't know how to do it.

fuck, i'm in ccnp3 right now. i'm so happy that we never have to do subnetting anymore

subnetting is a skill, you need to keep up on it or you will totally forget how to do it. i used to be able to answer something like this, about a year and a half ago...but now, hell no. i'd rather use a calculator
