I'm going to a studio to get my baby's pics taken.

I asked photographer about getting the files of the pics he's going to take. He said that he'd give me a cd w/ the jpgs for $40. I then asked him if he could give the .raw files, and he said he'd have to charge me $200. :o

Do you think it'd be bad form for me to take my own gear to take some pics? :o

Yes it would be inappropriate. The last thing I'd want is for someone else to get in my way to do a job that he's paying me to do. And then, have to deal with him or his baby's momma saying the photos suck. If you want to do it yourself, do it at your house instead of paying someone.

Only if you were reallly good friends with the dude, which it sounds like you aren't.

You could always ask if they rent their studio and then rent an hour on top of his session.

    He'll do it.

The $200 for the raws didn't bother me until I asked him how much he charges for a 4x6 print of the pics he takes, and he said $1 per print. :o

edit: should have asked him if he can do some hdr portraits

i wouldn't EVER give up m raw files.

if he's a pro and decent enough for you to be paying him that much upfront, the jpegs is all you need.

DO NOT bring your own cam :nono:

sit back, take some notes on how he works and look at his setups (not gear) and enjoy your new photos

I've liscenced RAW files for advertisement use. I couldn't care less how they process the picture to their liking.

And $1700 for baby portraits, holy shit. Link to photographer's website?

Looks like they have a lot of props and they know what they're doing, at least it's spread over 3 sessions.

You two must really want some baby pictures.

For $1700 you can buy some new gear and learn how to do it yourself over the time of 12 months.

thats really not that bad. when my daughter was born, one of the presents we got from my mom was 3 sittings and an 8x10 from each of them from a photographer that is friends with my mom. then my mom spent another $500+ each time we had some photos taken. and that didn't include any of the pictures as jpg's big enough you could print, my mom did get copies small enough to work in her digital picture frame though. all in all, i think my mom spent closer to 2k during that first year. having the first grandbaby worked out well for me. :o and thats what got me interested in photography too, so thanks for this expensive habbit mom! i think drugs would be cheaper :mamoru:

:slap: the photographer obviously has a good setup with props and that.Value his work..this market is going to shit because of that mentality

"Why should I pay a photographer who has invested in time and equipment when there are a bunch of dslrs available and i could buy one and do the same pictures"

    such bullshit.

shit $1700 :eek3: for that you'd think he would include a cd with jpegs, I can understand him not giving up the raw files...and $1 for a 4x6 print isnt bad its probably a nice print better than the 25 cents you pay at walmart anyway :mamoru:

1700 really isn't a bad price (not knowing what prints are included with the package) for 3 shoots. People I work with spend 6-700 per session at the cheesey photo places in the mall.....
