I've watched about 20 minutes of the first DVD and have learned some things, but the thing I've noticed the most is how many plugs he's been giving to a variety of companies

I think it's fucking amazing that he's able to speak this long without making a mistake. Most videos are like 2 minute clips chopped together.

He gives plugs to everyone, where they're due. It is pretty funny, although I do believe they're unbiased. Very good for someone who's starting out with off camera flash.

I like how he refers PW as crack

My first time hearing of him, he seems legit :dunno:

I am a noob, so what do I know :o

'So, for like 20 bucks...' :mamoru:

'I can peel off this little piece of tape, and I'm good to go!'

I didn't fully understand making that cloroplast. The way to cut the plastic was poorly explained imo. I have an idea of how I would make it but I could be wrong.

Corrugated boxes are the same thing and will let you get an understanding of how it needs to be cut, but the plastic gives you much better results.

Ok, I'm up to the part where he's actually going to start taking photos... There's about 5 hours of raw talking not counting the gear basics before you get here... Too much imo, I could see maybe 3 hours at the most for that information. A lot of what he was saying needed examples and didn't have them, easily remedied by talking about them WHILE doing setups.

The thing I think people get caught up on is they think he's some sort of revolutionary photographer... he's not really teaching anything new, and some of his photographs don't appeal to me at all. He is however on the forefront of the new movement of pro's teaching and sharing "secrets" The DVD wasn't exactly all I'd had hoped it would be, since most of it you get from reading the blog, but it was his 1st go at anything like this, and I expect his next one will be more shooting, less talking since that's what it seems like everyone wants.

Oh yeah, definitely. I wasn't saying he's biased. For example, he sits there for 15 minutes plugging the super clamp, and then explains a way to do it for less than $1. He's just trying to show us all what to use and how to use them and where to get them so we don't have to go searching :)

I, for one, like the DVD version because I tried to sit down and read the entire lighting 101 portion of his blog and got rather bored and the words started to blur off the page, so to speak. It's nice to have a face to watch and words to listen to, IMO.

I agree about practically everything you said though
