Paul Chek's How to Eat Move and Be Healthy has a good section on stretching.

Good rules are try to isolate muscles when stretching, try to hold the muscles for 30 seconds when doing static stretching, know how to phase your stretching from static to active to dynamic, stretch muscles not joints (ligaments), work to balance postural distortions like overactive rectus femoris and underactive hamstrings, as an example, and don't overstretch by doing too many different exercises for any given muscle or through bouncing or by over straining the muscle. Multiple sets and multiple exercises done for any one given muscle can lead to muscle break down causing soreness, and subsequently, more tightness, defeating the purpose altogether.

place a dictionary on the bottom of your foot during seated hamstring stretches to get some extra distance.
