I stream video from my site, and I want to stop people from ripping the file.

Is there a way to prevent someone from downloading it?

Running a linux server by the way.

easy answer, no. once you put something online, expect it to be ripped/stolen.

for a video, just place a watermark on it showing your website address.

watermarks will not stop them, it is easy to strip a watermark off of something anymore

Put it inside a folder and create an htaccess file that only allows your IP :dunno:

or just put a blank index file in there. Once you dont give out the actual file name, it's pretty hard for them to guess it.

Not possible, if a media player/swf player can open it, it can be saved or the stream captured & saved

most people just want to repost it somewhere else and dont give a shit less about the watermark and won't go through the trouble of removing it. obviously, there are exceptions.

allowing users to simply embed your videos on their site would ultimately be the best solution in my opinion.

Surely there is a way to do it... Anyone know how Hulu protects it's content?

couldn't you just change the .htaccess to only allow access to the files if the referrer is your web site?

if you don't have any links on the site directly to the content.. they shouldn't be able to get a referred link.. right?

How to watermark removing softwares work? Sometimes I can kind of do it to a static image in photoshop but I would imagine if it was placed over frames the background and stuff would be different in each one which would make removing it difficult. I'm just curious what kind of algorithm they use.

For every trick in the book there is a trick to get at it.

Yeah, I understand that, but I only want to make it difficult enough that most people will abandon trying to get it. I don't need it fully locked down.
