I work in IT for the US Forest Service, and this is a fairly common problem on our Windows 2000 computers (currently being phased out). What pisses me off is that on about 1 out of every 2 of these, by the time I can reach the users, they have already talked to "the local computer guy" who reimaged the computer.

    :uh:

So instead of a 5 minute process with zero data loss, you have a pissed off user with all of his data gone, and all because the "local computer guy" doesn't know that all you have to do is force-mount the partition and then reboot. Some days I really hate working in IT.

    Just wanted to gripe.

We're a federal agency, so we have employees and offices all over the country. And apparently each one has somebody who "knows all about computers" and messes them up for us.

It's no skin off my back, really. It's an easy closed ticket and one less user I have to hassle with, but still... it annoys me that the job isn't getting done right, you know?

just curious, how would you go about force mounting the partition?

Boot a windows 2000 cd, go to the repair console. Then you reboot and the system runs chkdsk and goes to the login screen.

Or boot a linux live cd, mount it with -f. Then reboot and the system runs chkdsk and goes to the login screen.

maybe you should have gotten a computer science degree instead of a degree on how to use a computer

If I had "a local guy" do anything to my work computer I'd be fired.

Why are they allowed to take their PC to someone who's not authorized?

    Good question.

The FS is pretty lax, though. It's not all strict and crazy like the DOD or anything. I mean, it's run by hippies. :mamoru:

When you finally get fed up with shit getting done wrong, it's time to get a job with a contractor instead. The government is only good at coming up with harebrained schemes and paying for them, not doing them right.

While I'm tempted to agree, the sad part is most of the CS majors I know are just as pathetic at fixing computers as normal users are, because fixing computers isn't what they do all day.

Maybe you should get some experience instead of talking out of your ass.

    I am a contractor. :mamoru:

The problem is that, given the comparatively lax security at the FS, not to mention the clusterfuck organization of the IT dept, there's not much we can do. Eric's computer goes down, Bob who sits next to him "knows all about computers" and somehow got his hands on a cd image set, so figures he'll make it all easier. :hsugh:

    Oh well.

How about if you set up an auto-reply that says "We got your message but we're two hours behind you, just go back to your crossword puzzle til we get to the office instead of letting some jackass 'fix' it for you."

Of course, I talk shit about the government, but when it comes to IT stuff the contractors usually aren't much better. Just yesterday a guy who usually works from his house told me that he's downloading business-sensitive email on his personal machine "because it's faster" and he's letting his wife use the company-provided machine I spent a day setting up for him. Yeah, that ended well.

Oh, and then there's the guy who wants to store all of his team's project data (several GBs) locally on each machine and sync it using Microsoft Groove, instead of checking files in/out from our Sharepoint site, "because the VPN is too slow." Nevermind that the Sharepoint server doesn't require the VPN.

The best thing is when somebody sends an email to the whole agency, and then you get a flood of dozens or hundreds of people clicking reply-all to say "Don't reply to all!"

The Reply All button really does need to be changed. It's fine if it puts everyone's email addresses on the email, but there should be a checkbox next to each address that you have to manually check if you want to send your email to that address. That way you don't have to look up everyone's addresses, but you can't just automatically spam all of them either.

I fucking hate it. We have a few clients who have employees who work all over the country, so we support their laptops.

But when something goes wrong rather than them call us they take it to the local guy who formats and rebuilds it.

then we have to go through the hassle of re-joining them to domina, re-configuring everything, so much hassle when if they'd call us to start with could have prob sorted it for them over the phone!
