Yup. There it is. Friend's computer won't boot after partitioning software resized his NTFS partition. Not a dual boot, just XPHome.

chkdsk /r or /f or just chkdsk from the recovery console won't work.

Ideas? Did i miss anything you guys need?

    the ntfs volume is fucked.

chkdsk /r can try to repair it... but if it doesn't, it's time to format and re-install.

Don't resize partitions unless you HAVE to.

It says chkdsk /r couldn't repair it cuz it was unrepairable. There's NO other way besides reformatting?

That's what I figured after he got this error, but I was hoping I was wrong. But, reformatting is probably the simplest.

Ubuntu Live CD won't let him even force a mount of the disk. GParted has a "Check" option when he right click son the drive. GParted also shows a "!" next to the drive, I forget what taht means though - hopefully this helps?

    pretty sure he's fucked.

you can try mouting the drive in a system with a working windows install.

generally speaking you do NOT want to mount possibly damaged ntfs volumes in linux. the linux ntfs implementation is a hacked-together piece of reverse-enginered crap that is not to spec.

I would have to go back and check my notes but I got a similar issue when using MS Private Folder and copying shit out of it went bad. I pulled the drive and put it in my work system and the work system blue screened!! The std XP repair CDs bue screened too. I got myself an Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, I remmed out the autoload NTFS option in one of the boot .ini's, I was able to get the system up and run chkdsk from there. A shitload of the indexes were fucked and I ended up loosing like 3 files. Worth a try if the data is important to you.

i have successfully repaired corrupted NTFS partitions with an acronis recovery CD and partitioning software. it was able to repair a partition corrupted after it was resized with other partitioning software, so you can always try this before reformatting.
